In professional sports today, few names resonate as loudly as Stephen Curry. The Golden State Warriors point guard is recognized for his exceptional shooting skills and charismatic personality. Yet, his journey of having a net worth of more than $160M was not a straightforward one. Curry’s life was once full of trials, tribulations, and triumphs. And it’s now the subject of a new documentary titled “Underrated.”

The documentary was recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s a story that goes beyond the basketball court. The story actually delves deep into his personal and professional life, and his achievements by consistently defying all odds.

But what makes this documentary truly special is the man himself.

The journey from being underrated to NBA stardom

The documentary “Underrated” traces Curry’s journey from being a “scrawny kid”. People often overlooked him to become one of the most celebrated players in the NBA. Curry’s college experience at Davidson College played a pivotal role in shaping his determination and mental strength. In his first game in college, things did not go as planned for young Steph. He faced many difficulties on the court, looking like “a baby giraffe out there.” However, it was Coach McKillop’s confidence in him allowing Curry to recover from these hurdles.

In an interview, Curry shares, “I was a late bloomer, the smallest kid on my team. And through it all, like I just loved what I got to do. I loved the opportunity to prove myself right, more than like carry that chip on your shoulder that I got to prove everybody wrong.” And the rest is history.

Intriguingly enough and unknown for many, Curry promised Coach McKillop and his mother that he would also complete college, despite entering the big leagues. Though it took him ten years to fulfill this, he ultimately obtained his sociology degree.

The documentary is a life lesson beyond basketball
