The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most frustrating teams to watch this season. While they have the potential to secure a victory against title favorites like the Celtics, their struggle to overcome rebuilding teams such as the Spurs has left fans and analysts perplexed. LeBron’s remarks after losing to the Hawks perfectly encapsulate their season. He said, “We could, on any given night, beat any team in the NBA. And then, on any given night, we could get our ass kicked by any team in the NBA.”

In recent weeks, LeBron James has cut an extremely disgruntled figure due to the Lakers’ inability to win games on a consistent basis. Speculations about LeBron’s discontent escalated significantly when he posted a few cryptic messages on his X account. While LeBron still hasn’t clarified the meaning behind these posts, LeBron’s agent Rich Paul has refuted any rumors of LeBron departing from the Lakers.

Now, in an interview with Clutch Point’s Michael Corvo, LeBron remained optimistic about the Lakers’ title aspirations. He said specifically on Vanderbilt’s injury, sharing, “Well, honestly we took a big hit with Vando last game. Our team has always been constructed around how healthy we can be. So, obviously that’s a big blow for us. But guys have to pick it up in his absence. If we can play some good basketball and string a couple of wins together, I think we’ll be ok.”

Jarred Vanderbilt suffered a non-contact injury on his right foot during the first half of the Lakers’ surprising win over Boston on Thursday. While the initial x-rays have come out as negative, there’s fear that further evaluation will reveal a much more significant injury. According to ESPN, the injury is in Vando’s mid-foot area and he might require season-ending surgery.

Can the Lakers cope with the extended absence of Vanderbilt?

Jarred Vanderbilt missed the first 20 games of the season due to a heel injury. During his absence, his defensive versatility, ability to force turnovers, and rebounding prowess were sorely missed by the Lakers. Vanderbilt has been an integral part of the Lakers since last season’s trade deadline. While a defensive stud, Vando has faced criticism for his restricted offensive contribution.

However, in recent weeks, Vanderbilt has enhanced his skill set by becoming a more adept slasher and improving his finishing abilities at the rim. But with Vando being sidelined for the foreseeable future, players like Rui Hachimura and Taurean Prince would have to step up.

According to Michael Corvo, LeBron has also urged D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves to play attacking, aggressive basketball. The Lakers could also try to replace Vando through the trade market. Players like Toronto’s Bruce Brown and Brooklyn’s Dorian Finney Smith are rumored to be on the trade block.
