Victor Wembanyama has generated unparalleled buzz around his debut in the Spurs uniform. While his 2023 Summer League performance had a lot to do with this hype, his partnership with his new coach, Gregg Popovich seemed fascinating.

“Gregg Popovich was really hard on me,” said the 6-time All-Star in his Hall of Fame speech. “He cursed a lot and said other crazy things. During my rookie season, I sometimes had tears in my eyes in the shower after practice. It sometimes bordered on abuse with me… There’s no denying it.”

I’m confident that when I get the chance to be coached by coach Popovich, he doesn’t lie to his players, he tells the truth. Sometimes it’s harsh, it’s hard, but this is what I want.”
