As his father looks to salvage his NBA season with the Lakers, Bryce James is grabbing the attention with his 17U debut in EYBL (Elite Youth Basketball League). Bryce’s team, Strive For Greatness, got off to an impressive start after they defeated Why Not by 11 points in Memphis. Like her support for LeBron James in the NBA, Savannah James instantly congratulated Bryce and his teammates on their win.

Bryce James was joined by Brayden Burries and Elzie Harrington as they put on a strong showing. As Bryce shone in the opener in Memphis, Savannah took to her official Instagram account to share a short video of Strive for Greatness’ first game of the EYBL season and captioned it with “Let’s go SFG!!!” Several rocket emojis accompanied Savannah’s caption.

Apart from Bryce James, there are other highly touted players hooping in this season’s EYBL. Five-star recruits like AJ Dybantsa, Cameron and Cayden Boozer (twin sons of former NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer), and Kiyan Anthony (son of 10x NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony) have all showcased their talents in the opening game of this season’s EYBL. Memphis is the first of four stops in the NIKE EYBL before the tour culminates at the Peach Jam in July, with stops in Atlanta, Indianapolis, and Kansas City sandwiched in between.

Savananah’s support for his son is nothing new. Last year in December Bryce starred for Sierra Canyon as they beat Centennial High School in a tournament scoring 9 points with all baskets coming beyond the three-point line. This prompted Savannah to post Bryce’s highlight reel from the match in her Instagram story with a GIF of someone using a blowtorch. Savannah has been supportive of both of her sons’ basketball careers.

Last year in an interview with USA Today she talked about backing her children in whatever endeavor they decide for themselves. She said, “I’m happy for them. Listen, I want nothing for them except for their happiness. That’s it. In whatever it is that they decide to do, I’m here supporting and rooting for them. I’m their biggest fan always. If they decide to go the NBA route or a different route, whatever it is, I’m here.” Bryce’s elder brother Bronny plays for the USC Trojans as a point guard.

Meanwhile, Bryce has had a rough 2023-24 season, as he switched several schools. He started the season with Notre Dame Sherman Oaks. However, Bryce couldn’t register any game time because he wasn’t eligible to play for them till 21st December. But instead of waiting to play for Notre Dame, he chose to go back to Sierra Canyon and finish his sophomore season there. The change of scenery didn’t really have an impact, as Bryce James still found it challenging to get regular playing minutes.

Despite having an underwhelming sophomore season, Bryce James isn’t short of college offers. He remains one of the most hyped-up collegiate prospects. Multiple D1 universities like Ohio State and Duquesne have already offered Bryce a scholarship. They have decided to take a punt on Bryce’s incredible upside in spite of his indifferent displays.

However, James hasn’t revealed his collegiate destination till now. While the Ohio State Buckeyes enjoy greater prominence, the Duquesne Dukes have familial ties with the James family. LeBron James’ high school teammate Dru Joyce is the current head coach of the Duquesne Dukes.

LeBron even congratulated Joyce when the news broke out via his X account. He wrote, “I’m proud to announce! As the unquestioned source I am confirming that Dru Joyce is the new HC at Duquesne University and is meeting with the team right now! So damn happy and proud of you my brother!!!”

Despite speculations about his collegiate future running rife, the sixteen-year-old has stayed committed to honing his game. He’s constantly up against some of the best high school prospects. And after a subpar sophomore season, Bryce would be highly motivated to take his game to the next level and gain some more momentum
