Chet Holmgren‘s squad emerged victorious in the NBA’s 2024 Rising Stars Challenge. While the festive game does not contribute to his ongoing MVP rankings, it adds an intriguing narrative against his on-court rival, Victor Wembanyama. With two years in the league, including an initial year on the sidelines due to injury, Holmgren stands as perhaps the only rookie with the most NBA experience.

When questioned about potential changes to the All-Star weekend, Holmgren had a specific suggestion, particularly regarding the Slam Dunk Contest. He proposed that players with the highest verticals should participate, offering a more level playing field for the competitors. Adding a humorous twist to his idea, Chet Holmgren quipped, “So … I’m safe.”

Adam Silver has been implementing numerous changes within the NBA to unleash its thriving potential. If Silver decides to heed Holmgren’s advice, it might pit players like Anthony Edwards, Shaedon Sharpe, Derrick Jones Jr., and Ja Morant against each other.

Earlier, the Dunk Contest was eagerly anticipated as the weekend’s main event by fans. However, its allure has slowly diminished over the years. While Chet’s idea may address part of the issue, the creativity aspect of the contest still leaves a gap. Last year, however, Mac McClung stole the show. Despite not currently being in the NBA, he has received an invitation from the NBA to defend his throne in the Dunk Contest.

The classic format will feature four dunkers, aligning for two dunks in the first two rounds. Two players with the highest combined scores progress to the championship round, with two more dunks for the win. Alongside McClung, Jaylen Brown, Jacob Toppin, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. are the other contestants for the 2024 showdown.

Chet Holmgren’s rival wants to be in the Dunk Contest

Throughout the season, Chet and Victor Wembanyama have been consistently compared. Recently, after expressing his intention to skip the All-Star festivities, Wembanyama stated that he would like to participate in the Dunk Contest and the Slam Dunk Contest in the future.

Given that he views these opportunities as items to check off his “bucket list,” there’s a good chance he may see his wishes granted soon. Although Chet’s suggested eligibility criteria for the Dunk Contest would immediately disqualify him. However, the compelling storylines and narratives around both the rookies might pull them in against each other.
