While the young stars dictate the league, the former superstars sometimes are made to pay the price. Especially, Russell Westbrook, who has clearly gone way past his prime years, is in a lot of trouble heading into the 2024 off-season. Following the LA Clippers‘ embarrassing exit from the playoffs, Russell Westbrook’s spot on the roster hangs on a loose thread and two veteran backcourt stars emerged as the possible replacement. Now that one of them is likely to back out, Chris Paul seems to be the only threat to the former MVP.

During the 2023 off-season, the Clippers surprised the NBA world when they signed up Russell Westbrook for two years for a meager value of $7.8 million. Many argued that it was Ty Lue’s trust in Russ’ leadership and the former MVP’s on-court sacrifice as the reasons behind the trade. However, it all seems to have gone out of the window with the latest report. Heading into the off-season, the Clippers have shown interest in CP3 and Kyle Lowry to strengthen their backcourt.

However, as per the latest report from Marc Stein, the 38-year-old is “widely expected” to re-sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. Ahead of the 2024 trade deadline in February, the Philly side roped in the veteran guard into their roster. And with only a few more seasons left in him, Lowry, a native might stick with the City of Brotherly Love despite the Clippers’ interest.

Kyle may have made the best decision. The Philly side has a spot left to accommodate a superstar in their roster after James Harden‘s exit. So, if the Sixers trade a superstar in the off-season to pair with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, we have another super team.

On the other hand, the Clippers which formed a super team with the Beard failed miserably in the last postseason after a clinical run in the regular season. That takes everyone’s mind to the next flaming question.

How will Chris Paul fit in the Clippers side over Russell Westbrook?

The Warriors traded in Chris Paul for a 2-year contract, promising him $30 million annually. Steve Kerr made him come off the bench for the first time in his career. CP3 indeed made the difference for the Dubs’ second unit with his leadership, averaging 9.2 points and 6.8 assists. Heading into the next season, the Warriors can either play with him for another $30 million or let him go in without paying a dime. Notably, with the Klay Thompson situation, the GSW will most likely let go of CP3 in order to find a superstar in the starting lineup. Moreover, the Warriors have time till June 28 to decide their future with the 39-year-old, as per Marc Stein.

And, if the Clippers manage to get Paul, they can pair him up with his former teammate, James Harden. While the Beard already holds the license to orchestrate the game from the backcourt, Paul could further strengthen the side with his basketball IQ and leadership. On the other hand, several rumors suggest that Paul George could leave the franchise in the off-season. Nevertheless, everything will come to light in a matter of a few weeks. Until then, the fans have to wait for official updates.
