Despite his success and track record, Jason Kidd can’t do it all by himself. Every good coach needs a staff to help them see what they’re missing, question their decisions, and generally make their job easier. And as uncertainty looms over Kidd with his former franchise pursuing him, the Mavs have decided to get Kidd some help. Perhaps that could allude to his future being in Dallas.

See, the upcoming season is set to be huge for the Mavs. It will be Anthony Davis’ first full season. Not to mention the likely arrival of Cooper Flagg. Clearly, their head coach will have his hands full. In light of this, the Mavs have gone all out in giving Jason Kidd some relief with their latest hire, who is a former NBA assistant coach. And both Jake Fischer of The Athletic and Dallas Morning News’ Mike Curtis have reported this.

The #Mavs have agreed to terms with former Kings assistant Jay Triano to become the second-lead assistant on Jason Kidd’s coaching staff, a person familiar with the team’s thinking confirms,” wrote Curtis on X.

Jay Triano is set to be an incredible addition to Jason Kidd’s coaching staff. He brings both experience and a fresh perspective – things the Mavs need. After all, he was an assistant coach at the Kings and the Phoenix Suns’ head coach before that. Moving on, Kidd will certainly need someone dependable to help him figure out the best way to build the Mavs squad and tactics around him. Jay Triano can be that for Jason Kidd.

And per The Athletic, Mavs GM Nico Harrison reportedly assured Triano that Kidd will remain at the Dallas Mavericks’ helm. But you may be wondering: ‘Can he really make that guarantee considering the Knicks’ interest in Jason Kidd?’ Well, it’s a fair question, so let’s get to it because the Mavs expect Kidd to stay. Here’s why.

Dallas Mavericks expect Jason Kidd to stay despite Knicks’ interest

The New York Knicks are the only team in the league right now in the market for a coach. And at the top of their list of targets is their former point guard, Jason Kidd, who still has two years left on the contract with the Mavs. Multiple sources have reported that the Knicks plan to approach the Dallas Mavericks to allow them to interview Jason Kidd.

It seems, in spite of all this, the Dallas Mavericks are not worried about Kidd leaving. Sam Amick and Christian Clark of The Athletic report that the Dallas front office expects Kidd to resign. “The widely held belief is that Kidd, ultimately, is hoping to parlay the Knicks’ interest into a lucrative contract extension,” they wrote. But there’s a caveat.

“It remains to be seen how Kidd might respond if he doesn’t get the desired extension, and there is historical precedent here when it comes to Kidd spurning the Mavericks for the Knicks,” they added. You see, Kidd was expected to re-sign with the Mavs in his final act as a player. However, he ended up signing with the Knicks to play with Carmelo Anthony.

But now, the Mavs believe that lightning won’t strike twice. They’ve even made additions to their coaching staff with that in mind. So, for their and their fanbase’s sakes, let’s hope it all pans out!
