The Milwaukee Bucks had every reason to crumble. They entered Thursday night’s matchup against LA Clippers with a cloud hanging over them—Bobby Portis’ suspension. The team’s high-energy sixth man had just been handed a 25-game ban for reportedly violating the league’s drug policy, leaving Milwaukee without a key piece of its rotation. Yet, when it mattered most, the Bucks didn’t fold. They pulled off a 116-110 victory, thanks to clutch performances from their veterans—none more crucial than Brook Lopez.

With 6:27 remaining on the clock, the Bucks found themselves trailing 101-96. That’s when their 36-year-old big man stepped up. Lopez not only finished with 22 points but also knocked down a momentum-shifting three-pointer in crunch time. Needless to say, post-game saw a happy Doc Rivers who couldn’t seem to praise the 7’1 center enough!

“We basically said when you get to the paint, if you see uh his man, that means he’s open, and they read it perfect uh threw it, and he was ready to shoot it,” Rivers said. The trust was clear—Brook Lopez was an even bigger part of the Bucks formula moving forward. ‏

But what about Milwaukee’s star duo? Well, simply put, they played their roles well. Giannis Antetokounmpo posted 23 points while Damian Lillard added 15 to end the night. However, Dame admitted that he wasn’t at his best. “I didn’t feel great, you know? I just, I’ve been feeling a little bit just exhausted, and you know, kind of nursing a few things over the last week and a half. And then you know, long All-Star break, you know, I didn’t really have a break so um I knew coming in that it was going to be more of a mental game for me,” Damian Lillard said in the post-game presser.

The All-Star break, which was supposed to offer some respite, had instead been another stretch of non-stop activity for Lillard. That fatigue showed, but as Rivers pointed out, that’s what separates great players stand out.

“That’s the difference between an average player and a great player,” Coach Rivers rightly noted. “Dame was struggling… the average player goes away for the game. Dame came back in and turned back into Dame, and that’s what makes him special.”

What makes him even more special is Damian Lillard has no problem giving credit when and where it’s due. In the Bucks’ hard-fought win against the Clippers, he credited his teammates for a solid team effort to get them through. That said, this isn’t the first time Milwaukee has had to rally through tough circumstances.

Just last month, a snowstorm disrupted their travel schedule, yet they still pulled off a gutsy win against the Heat. While the Bucks proved they could step up in Portis’ absence, Rivers made it clear he wasn’t happy about the circumstances.

Doc Rivers expresses his thoughts after Bobby Portis Jr.’s suspension

The Bucks‘ win was a statement, but it doesn’t erase the challenge ahead. Portis’ absence leaves a significant void—both in production and energy. The 30-year-old forward had been averaging 13.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists this season before the suspension, handed down due to unintentional use of Tramadol, a pain medication banned under the NBA’s drug policy.

Rivers, for his part, made it clear where he stood on the matter.

“Obviously, this [investigation] has been going on for a while, and it’s really, it bothers me in a lot of ways because Bobby – I want to make something clear – Bobby is not a drug user, alright? I hate that it just says that you flunked the drug policy,” Doc said.

He further defended Portis by saying “he’s not a cheater,” emphasizing that mistakes happen.

While the suspension stings, Rivers & Co. has to focus on moving forward; leaning on players like Lopez even more to hold things down. With Portis out, Brook’s role isn’t just about scoring. It’s about leadership, experience, and stepping into gaps left by his teammate. The Clippers matchup was just the first test, and Milwaukee passed. But the coming weeks will truly reveal whether the Bucks can weather this storm without one of their most vocal and energetic players.

If Thursday night was any indication, Lopez is ready to shoulder the load. And as Rivers’ trust in him grows, the ‘Brew City’ might just come out of this stretch even stronger than before.
