Super teams have seemingly become a norm in the NBA for the past decade or so. Gone are those days when franchises used to build their own big three from the ground up by drafting talented players or investing in player development. With the ‘win now’ mindset that most teams have, everyone is on the lookout to add stars to their franchise. Kevin Durant often faces criticism for forming super teams wherever he goes.

These super teams often face a lot of heat, hate, and criticism from fans and analysts alike. But this ex-All-Star former teammate of Kevin Durant had nothing but love for him and what the team had managed to do.

It seems as if players would take a pay cut just to chase a ring and form a super team wherever possible. That is what happened with the Brooklyn Nets a year ago when they added James Harden to the mix.

The team already had Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving along with a few more former all-Star veterans. Unfortunately for them, the locker room was filled with so much superstar ego that the experiment failed.

Recently, Durant’s former teammate LaMarcus Aldridge talked about the benefits of being on a super team. Aldridge made an appearance on Oddball with Amin Elhassan and Charlotte Wilder. That is where he talked about the transition from playing for the San Antonio Spurs to the Nets.

While on the podcast, Aldridge said, “It was easy because playing with those guys, it was like, how crazy the game, how simple the game became.” He went on to add, “I remember like, we were just running this simple play where I got pinned down for KD.”

“I pinned down for him and he’s so good that both players go with him. And I just like, turn and the ball is in my hands and I dunk it.”

The perks of playing on a super team

LaMarcus Aldridge mentioned how easy the game became playing with three stars on the Brooklyn Nets. The amount of attention those players demanded on defense made things awfully easy for LA.

That is one of the advantages of playing on super teams. When the other players receive the ball to make a play, they’re usually wide open due to the defense demanded by superstars. Unfortunately, the stars together could not make things work.

First, it was Harden who left the Nets, followed by both Irving and Durant. And that was the short stint of a super team formed in Brooklyn to chase a ring. One cannot help but wonder what could’ve been if this team had stayed together for another year or two.
