The Los Angeles Lakers have lost again, this time to conference-leading Minnesota Timberwolves. In the last ten games, the Lakers have lost seven times. Such a performance is typically associated with teams situated at the lower end of the standings, contrasting with the expectations of a team aiming for a championship. The Lakers have witnessed a sharp decline in form post their In-Season tournament triumph.

Their closely fought 108-106  loss to the Timberwolves was in particular devastating because of a dubious refereeing decision late in the game. However, Anthony Davis has taken the blame for the loss on himself after a “rare” mistake.

Anthony Davis did not excuse himself and pointed out his role in their loss, as he missed two crucial free throws in the dying embers of the match. In a post-match interview, Davis said, “Anytime you lose, you look back and think of what could you have done better as a team and as an individual. The first thing that comes to mind is just those two free-throws, which is very rare for me.”

The Lakers must promptly arrest their slump, as their inconsistent form might prove to be detrimental to their title hopes. The Lakers currently occupy the 9th spot in the Western Conference standings, with 17 wins and 16 losses. Head coach Darwin Ham has a lot of work to do in the training sessions to get the Lakers back to the upper echelons of the Western Conference standings. But, are the Lakers capable of winning the 2024 NBA title?

The Lakers have a mountain to climb if they still harbor aspirations of a title victory. But, not too long ago, the Lakers proved their title credentials by winning the inaugural In-Season tournament. The Lakers were dominant in the tournament, winning all seven of their games. However, post their tournament triumph, the Lakers have been abysmal.

While they remain one of the stingiest teams in the league, offensively the Lakers have looked devoid of any inspiration. Despite possessing the likes of LeBron and Anthony Davis, the Lakers have the 7th worst offense in the NBA, with an offensive rating of 113. The Lakers must find their footing quickly, otherwise their title rivals might leave them in the dust.
