Derrick Rose?is the most explosive point guard ever seen in the NBA. His ferocity and under-the-basket acrobatics left defenders in dust regularly. His relentless speed and ability to contort his body to finish over and around bigger players is still a unique sight. However, despite his generational talent and one-of-a-kind play style, his body could not bear the load. After facing an ACL injury in the 2012 playoffs, Rose’s career became a big “what if,” just like Tracy McGrady.

Coming from an injury after surpassing LeBron James in the MVP race and being named the youngest NBA MVP ever, Rose began playing in 2013. But two months into the season, he tore his meniscus in the right knew.

Since then, Rose has seen a decline in his athleticism and durability. Constantly nudged by injuries, his lightning-quick first step slowed down, and his air time was reduced. This led to Rose being a superstar in the league, settling for a bench player role. However, despite his downfall, Rose is getting paid superstar money by Adidas.

Derrick Rose deal was bigger than LeBron James and Nike’s

Rose quickly became one of the most interesting and appreciated players in the NBA. Because of his rare skills, he was quickly put on a pedestal along with LeBron James and?Kobe Bryant. Adidas saw the demand for Rose and his presence within the crowd and wanted him to be on their side. Unlike any other player, they managed to lock in Rose for the coming 14 years in a unique deal.

During the All-Star weekend in 2011, Adidas and Rose came to a complicated deal. The contract showcased the enormous bet Adidas was willing to place on the former NBA MVP. The reported value of the contract was an astounding $185 million, extending over 14 years. This deal had more monetary involvement than LeBron James‘ first $87 million deal with Nike.

The deal entitled Rose to receive annual retainers of up to $12 million, depending on the year. For the upcoming season, he is eligible for $5,000,000. Additionally, the contract included the potential for annual royalties of up to $6.25 million, appearance fees amounting to as much as $4.8 million each year, and the exclusive use of a private plane for his convenience.

Moreover, Rose made sure to take care of those close to him. His older brother, Reggie Rose, received an annual payment ranging between $250,000 – $300,000 as a consultant (2011-2025). On the other hand, Rose’s best friend since sixth grade, Randall Hampton, served as his assistant and earned between $50,000 and $75,000 annually (2011-2015) for his consulting services. Furthermore, Adidas pledged to contribute $150,000 each year to the AAU team of Rose?s choosing.

Why is Adidas still paying Rose?

The contract explicitly stated that the deal could be terminated if Rose were to retire from basketball before 2025. Till now, Rose has either been out with injuries or has found a jersey to kit up for, regardless of his role. Despite not being a marketable figure, even after his 50-point game in 2018, he has?found a “job” in the NBA. Hence, making him eligible to make tens of millions from his deal with Adidas.

At various stages of the contract, Adidas had measures to safeguard itself from being obligated to pay Rose. Towards the contract’s conclusion, Adidas acquired the right to reduce payments to Rose if he failed to participate in at least 41 regular season games in any given season.

However, despite Rose being unable to play even half of the season games, there is no indication of Adidas invoking this part of the deal. The reason for their decision remains unclear.
