However, Erik Spoelstra, the assistant coach for the USA, is also receiving attention because of his close ties to the Philippines. Spoelstra was born and raised in the United States. However, his mother Elisa Celino, a native of San Pablo, Laguna, has ties to the Philippines. Spoelstra’s dual citizenship as an American and a Filipino is sure to attract spectators, creating a special emotional connection as the World Cup takes place in Manila.
