Why doesn’t Trae Young make it to Team USA?

Young’s snubbing in recent years has nothing to do with his on-court performance. It is his attitude and internal politics which are holding the 2-time All-Star back from achieving his dream.

Former Detroit Pistons star Grant Hill is currently in charge of selecting players for the National Team. Despite being a Hawks minority owner, eminent voices from across the sporting world have called out Hill for being biased against Young.

In fact, the Hawks star has even unfollowed Hill on social media platforms after the FIBA 2023 snub. However, there are other reasons behind his snub as well.

Young is listed at 6-foot-1 inches tall and smaller guards have struggled against physical teams like Argentina and Spain. Moreover, Ice Trae’s lack of defense also plays a role in his snub.

Additionally, Team USA is stacked in the guard position. Tyrese Haliburton, Jalen Brunson, and Austin Reaves can conveniently cover that position while also contributing to defense.

Young dreams of representing his country

Despite the latest rejections, the 24-year-old has huge dreams of representing his country. During a podcast appearance with NBA veteran Gilbert Arenas, the Hawks star talked about his frustrations.

“I definitely want to. It’s up to them if they want me to. I would love to play with guys, show off my passing even more; and not have to go out and score a lot and just be there if they need me to”, said Young while talking with Arenas according to CBS Sports.

Despite a special USA edition shoe release with $36 billion giants Adidas in 2021 and all his accomplishments, it looks like Young has to do more. His best shot comes next year at the 2024 Olympics where Stephen Curry is also speculated to play.
