In the 2023 off-season, the Houston Rockets added Dillon Brooks to their young roster. The idea was that Brooks coupled with Fred VanVleet, will provide a veteran-like wisdom to the players. The franchise was able to cultivate a lot of that, as displayed through their late-season 11-game winning streak. However, since then, the Rockets have declined even faster. After the Dallas Mavericks loss, the Rockets are now on a 5-game losing streak. While a lot of fans are blaming their approach and parts of the roster, Dillon Brooks blames a mindset shift.

Talking after the elimination from playoff contention, Brooks claimed that he could not level up his plays while feeding on defensive matchups all year. With that, he said, “Going into next year and years to come, I ain’t gonna change.” Moreover, he claims that the majority of the change came from blending in with the squad, ultimately blaming it on the league.

The Canadian player said, “I feel like the NBA restrained me from playing that type of game”. Dillon Brooks, from his stint with the Memphis Grizzlies, has a reputation for being one of the most notorious players on the court.

Moreover, he has the ability to radiate it 4x on the court, through his teammates. His loud and vocal presence on the young Grizzlies team was seen throughout the roster, as they wreaked havoc last year; all while getting under players’ skins all season long. However, this season, with a few such cameos from time to time, Brooks managed to stay off the villainous headlines.

Even though the forward managed to challenge the likes of Stephen Curry and LeBron James on the court, his actions seemed like, just like he claimed, a bit confined.

Dillon Brooks has more than his antics to rely on

Despite of all the heat the 29-year-old takes for getting into opposing players’ heads, Dillon Brooks is not your average ‘hustle’ player. Sure, his spark and energy for the game come from the controversial tactics. However, beyond that, Brooks is also a great offensive player.

With a demeanor no less than the first offense option on a squad, Brooks can make shots from all over the floor; that too with efficiency and in high-stakes situations. Last year, Brooks channeled the hate towards him from the Grizzlies playoff run into the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Brooks was a crucial starter for Canada throughout the tournament, who eliminated Team USA’s shot at a medal.

Moreover, as he consistently rose to the ‘final second’ situations on both ends of the floor, Brooks topped the nation’s scoring record with 39 points. Moreover, he helped Canada clinch its first-ever FIBA WC medal; all while being awarded the FIBA World Cup Best Defensive Player.
