What makes a player sign a contract extension? Financial security? Championship prospects? Age and future? Loyalty? Sure, these can be essential factors, but when you look at the Cleveland Cavaliers’ star guard Donovan Mitchell, who signed a three-year, $150 million extension in 2024, his focus lies on something more essential.

It’s the Cavaliers’ food program that has tied down the guard to the Land. Not to forget, it did pay them dividends, as the team surged through the 2024-25 season with a 64-18 record and pushed for the same in the current campaign. Speaking to Joe Vardon, Mitchell candidly explained how the team’s meal program influenced his decision.

“I talk about the basketball stuff, but part of it is why I re-signed here. When you have a team that, and it’s not BS food either, it’s like top of the top chefs making it in front of you, and it’s like gluten-free, dairy-free, all the right stuff,” Donovan Mitchell said. It reflected the broader shift in the way organizations function to keep their players at the required standard.

“When you have a team that believes in nutrition as much as they believe in medical, and what you do on the floor, I think it shows the mindset of an organization,” he added.

Moreover, it’s not only about the nutrition but also the convenience that the franchise has built along with it. Depending on the time of day, whether it is a late morning breakfast or an early supper the night before a game, there might be egg whites and rich breakfast smoothies on the tables, or if it’s later, fish, chicken, steak, and vegetables.

Now factor in how difficult it is for an NBA player to make a reservation and step out for dinner, and it becomes all the more necessary. They must go through multiple procedures and security checks.

The Cavs made it easier for their players by paying the five-star hotel’s top chefs to serve at least two meals for the entire traveling party. Speaking of which, Spida added:

“It’s like, ‘Hey, let’s all go downstairs and eat.’ It’s not like, all right, we got to go, we’ve got to order the Uber. It’s just so much easier. As I said, it costs. Some teams don’t want to do that.”

Above all, these meals aren’t only for the players but for friends, family, staff, social media, broadcasters, and everyone associated with the team.

The franchise, though, has declined to disclose its spending on its road nutrition program; it’s a competitive trade secret. Per the league’s collective bargaining agreement with the players’ association, all members of a team’s travel party get a per diem for road trips, which is roughly $120 per day. So, Cleveland is paying out those daily stipends in addition to its daily catered meals.

So, it wasn’t just Donovan Mitchell; even James Harden, the newest member of the side, was also impressed.

Can Donovan Mitchell make a difference with James Harden alongside?

Speaking of the program, he said, “Definitely up there in the sense of making sure players are covered in every aspect. That’s what makes them an amazing organization.”

The Cavs have a 16-6 record with James Harden in the lineup, which has increased their odds of winning the title. The team is currently standing at the fourth seed in the East with only 1.5 games behind the Knicks for the third seed. The team can string together a last-minute winning stretch to seal the season on a positive note.

Last season, despite a thunderous regular season, the Cavs ended the postseason on a disappointing semifinal loss against the Pacers. This season, with James Harden, who has yet to prove himself in the postseason, the Cavs have an interesting few weeks ahead of them.
