The 2023 ESPYS lived up to its hype. On a night of glitz and glam, the most outstanding sporting achievements were awarded. Among those hailed was the King LeBron James for his uncanny feat. But it was The Chosen One’s ‘I still got it’ assertion that earned him a reporter’s rancid reaction.

LeBron James’ 20th season in the NBA was nothing short of historical. The Lakers legend achieved a pinnacle that was thought to be unachievable. James surpassed Kareem Abdul Jabbar to become the all-time leading scorer in the NBA. This remarkable achievement is what earned him the Best Record Breaking Performance Award at ESPYS. But his award speech dismissing his retirement rumors didn’t please everyone.

LeBron James catches strays from Gottlieb

In a heartbreaking press conference statement after the Los Angeles Lakers got eliminated last season, James claimed he had a “lot to think about” which left the fans in confusion. However, he had some interesting words after receiving the award at the ESPYs. “The day I can’t give the game everything on the floor,” he announced, “is the day I’ll be done. Lucky for you guys, that day is not today.” The world rejoiced the return of the King but Doug Gottlieb was not so pleased.

On the Doug Gottlieb show, Doug had some words for the 4 time MVP. He started off by explaining what he thought a narcissist was, saying “personal qualities that include a very high belief in oneself, needing admiration, believing others are inferior and lacking empathy towards others“.

He then justified his statements by saying, “it doesn’t mean you’re an evil human being…you’re not a homicidal maniac.” However, he accused James again, right after: “You’re just somebody who has, boy, you’re really high on yourself…..you feed off that and it grows.

He further mentioned LeBron James can be a philanthropist “but the need to stand in front of a room full of his peers and announce something that nobody ever disputed, was just bizarre. It’s quite obviously narcissistic behaviour.”

Doug Gottlieb certainly believes James has a narcissistic attitude but how far can that be justified?

The King never had to beat his own drum

Coming into the NBA as a teen sensation, James was already lauded as Michael Jordan’s rival for legacy. The Kid from Akron was consequently hailed as “The Chosen One“. However, the 4 time NBA Champion not only lived up to the expectations but also defied them.

LeBron James has had an illustrious career in the NBA but never did he have to beat his own drum. He ascended to legendary status over the years. Coaches, teammates, opponents and almost everyone that interacted with James on the court have only had praises for the 19 time All Star. However, “The King” is a self acclaimed title by James.
