Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom wants the WNBA to suspend A’ja Wilson after the Las Vegas Aces star got into a heated exchange with a fan during Game 2 of the playoffs.
The moment came with around four minutes left in Indiana’s 99-89 win over Las Vegas. After Wilson drew a foul on Sophie Cunningham, she turned toward a fan seated behind the basket and walked over to him. The two exchanged words before her teammates and arena personnel stepped in. Wilson was then handed a technical foul.
Freedom then took to X to criticize Wilson’s actions and argue that the technical foul was not enough. In his post, he called the moment a “drama queen” incident and also called for consequences for the teammates who followed Wilson toward the spectator.
“What a drama queen! A’ja Wilson should be suspended immediately, along with every teammate who followed her into the stands,” Kanter wrote. “She left the court, walked into the baseline seats, and confronted a fan.”
The former NBA player based his argument on Rule 12A of the WNBA rulebook, which states that a player who deliberately enters the spectator stands during a game must be ejected. Freedom specifically cited the rule in his post while calling for the league to take action against Wilson.
“Rule 12A is clear: if a player deliberately enters the stands during a game, they are automatically ejected.”
Wilson was not ejected from the game. The WNBA’s postgame officiating explanation said she received the technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct stemming from her interaction with the fan.
The fan, meanwhile, was briefly escorted from his seat before being allowed to return. The Fever later said arena security had spoken with the fan and witnesses and found no violation of the team’s Fan Code of Conduct.
Wilson addressed the confrontation after the game and explained why she reacted to the spectator. She said the man stepped toward her and pointed at her, which she considered unacceptable.
“You never should stand and point at me,” Wilson said. “I’m not, I’m not, I’m not for that sh*t at all. Excuse my French, and God bless me, but that there is unacceptable.”
She also added, “You don’t have to love me.”
Freedom later directed another message at Wilson, pointing to her status within the league.
“Hey Aja, you’re the face of the @WNBA. Control your emotions or face the consequences. Rules are rules. Apply them.”
The confrontation came during a crucial Game 2 for both teams. Indiana erased an 11-point deficit and secured the 99-89 victory to tie the first-round series at 1-1. Wilson finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, two assists and three steals, while the series now heads to a decisive Game 3 in Las Vegas.
Freedom’s suspension demand remains his own call for disciplinary action. Wilson’s punishment during the game was the technical foul, while the Fever determined that the spectator had not violated its Fan Code of Conduct.
