Does Draymond Green's heckling actually fuel Stephen Curry's greatness on the court?

Remember Stephen Curry‘s last scoring title? Well, the 2020-21 season wasn’t too long ago. For the first time since his second MVP season, Curry was dominating the league like never before. Playing without Klay Thompson was already a tough task, but Steph seemed to have turned on the switch that season. And it didn’t take him too long to get into his rhythm as the Chef dropped his career-high 62 points in just the sixth game of the season. Draymond Green, on the other hand, was the facilitator and was aware of the type of run Steph was going through. So much so, that he’d warn Curry’s defenders.

In one of the games against the Nuggets, Steph went berserk, scoring 53 points and 10 triples. Now, the Nuggets were playing without their star guard, Jamal Murray. Instead, they had the Spanish point guard, Facundo Campazzo to take care of things. While Campazzo wasn’t the best scorer, he certainly was a great perimeter defender. But then again, going up against Steph that season would be anyone’s nightmare. While trying to guard Steph, Green warned Campazzo and suggested that he should take a breather on the bench. “No matter how you defend him, Curry is going to score 30 points. So, ask to be subbed out and have someone else defend him.”, Green said.

Moreover, Draymond did not seem to like Campazzo. In fact, it was Green who told Steph to drop a 50-bomb on Campazzo, as his ex-teammate Juan Toscano Anderson recalls. “This the game I knew Dray and Steph really had each other back. Dray told Steph to give Facu 50 b/c he was talkin crazy… and Steph did just that”, Anderson wrote. Moreover, after draining a contested fadeaway triple on Campazzo, Curry turned back and said, “Get him off me”. But for Campazzo, the 5’10 guard was only trying his best to guard Steph.

Facundo gave his all on the defensive end, trying to guard elite-level guards. At the end of the day, he just did not want to end up in the Top 10 of the Week. “I had to defend Stephen Curry and Trae Young … there were these rappers sitting in the front row. They were saying to him, ‘Attack him, he can’t defend you! Look, look, he doesn’t know how to defend!’… And I was thinking, ‘Please don’t attack me! … Or don’t fall so you don’t end up in the top 10 of the week.'”, Campazzo said. The Spanish guard was heckled by fans throughout the season. Still, Campazzo did quite well on his part when it mattered the most.

On the other hand, Green’s warning showed how well he understood Curry’s talents during a game.  The two have always been incredible teammates and their rotations have been even more entertaining. Draymond has dished out most of his assists to Steph throughout his career. During the same year, Steph was surprised at how Green was able to execute such accurate dimes.

The Chef knows how perfectly Green finds him on the floor. And as easy as it might look, only high IQ players can execute such plays. Stephen Curry had nothing but respect for his teammate, calling him a master of assists. “(Draymond Green) is the smartest basketball player I’ve ever played with … He can execute the angle of the pass, speed of the pass, timing of the pass, whatever it is – he’s a master at it,” Curry said.

Steph averaged 32 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists while shooting over 42% from deep back in 2021. If it wasn’t for his win record, Steph would have won his third MVP title. And out of all, it was Green who helped Curry throughout the season, having averaged 7 assists a game. Things got even better the following year when Klay Thompson returned and the Dubs went on to win yet another championship. Curry and company had some of the best performances from 2021-22.

While the Warriors prepare for what seems a tough season ahead, it will be interesting to watch Stephen Curry go off again. What are your thoughts on 2021 Steph Curry? Do you think he should’ve won the MVP title that year? Let us know in the comments.
