As the NBA offseason winds down, one high-profile name remains conspicuously absent from any roster. While much of the spotlight has been on Ben Simmons, Russell Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star and former MVP, remains without a team for the upcoming season. With training camp looming, speculation is rampant about whether he will take his talents overseas, retire, or stage a surprise NBA return. Recent claims even suggest a possible landing spot with the 2024-25 runner-up Indiana Pacers, but is there any truth to it?

Amidst the growing rumors, Basketball Rush posted something intriguing on Facebook. Westbrook is appearing on the Indiana Pacers’ radars! Is he done signing for the ball club? No, that hasn’t happened yet. But the whispers could be true given Tyrese Haliburton’s injury. The Pacers, coming off a Finals run, could use a veteran at the wheel to keep their best alive. Even Fox Sports reported the possibility of Indiana going after the seasoned point guard.

“If Carlisle thinks a change is needed or injury presents itself, Westbrook can slide into the starting five. Westbrook thrived in a split sixth-man-starter role with the Nuggets last season,” they wrote. Notably, Westbrook was valuable for the Denver Nuggets in a bench role. The former MVP averaged 13.3 points and 6.1 assists during the regular season.

Despite a decline in his scoring in recent years, Brodie still knows how to run an offense. Once a heartbeat for the Thunder, Russell Westbrook thrives off his speed. But can the Pacers accommodate him well? Yes, Russell Westbrook’s explosive speed and relentless transition play have long been his trademarks. The Indiana Pacers, known for their offense, could seemingly provide a fitting environment for his skill set in Hali’s absence. But then again, opinions are divided.

Westbrook’s potential addition to the Pacers also raises questions. While his experience and leadership could benefit the team, especially in Haliburton’s absence, the fit isn’t perfect. Some analysts suggest that prioritizing the development of younger talents might be more beneficial for the Indiana Pacers‘ long-term success.

But if this actually works out, Westbrook can replicate Tyrese Haliburton’s impact closely. But although experience could be beneficial for the young side, Indiana does have a highly talented team.

Pacers can’t promise Russell Westbrook a consistent role

Westbrook could be a dynamic addition for the Indiana Pacers. But the problem is the Pacers, while young, are bold. They have a vast pool of players who can help them have a successful season. Canada’s Andrew Nembhard averaged 12.5 points and 4.7 assists during the postseason. The savvy guard is usually deployed as a defensive anchor.

But with Tyrese Haliburton out, the Pacers will look to develop Nembhard’s scoring acumen and creation. In fact, T.J. McConnell could also take on the starting role. His competitive instincts and quickness played a vital role in their fairytale run this past season. Additionally, they also have guards like Mathurin and Nembhard to play an extended role.

Russell Westbrook could serve the same purpose. But the Pacers could instead use the spot to add a player they really need. They have a plethora of guards with different profiles, which enables Carlisle to manage injuries. Even if Russ does join, it’s hard to picture the former Clippers guard not getting regular playing time and still being happy.
