After sweeping the Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi, Jayson Tatum of the Celtics had a paling moment. A reporter asked the decorated forward whether his handpiece was a “kid’s watch”. Why the astonishment? Tatum was sporting a $200,000 work of luxury, a unique collection by Richard Millie that costs a fortune. “That was crazy,” he said looking at Derrick White in bemusement of the remarks by the reporter.

In the following days, the news spread like wildfire. Everyone wanted clarification. Did the Celtics’ foundational star really sport a children’s watch? Roman Sharf of Luxury Bazar cleared the picture. The watch in question – RM 07-01 Pastel Lavender Richard Mille he revealed is a “unisex” watch as part of the luxury watchmakers’ Colored Ceramics collection. While it can be perceived as a “ladies” watch, he assured it’s most certainly not a kid’s item.

Furthermore, Sharf also had some advice for the reporter, who though brave was clearly uninformed. “If you don’t know much about watches perhaps that’s not a comment should make,” he said.

The CEO also claims he himself wouldn’t wear the watch, but understood Jayson Tatum’s choice. He feels NBA players are “trendsetters” and his wearing the watch was warranted. Jayson Tatum also wore the same timepiece after clinching Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.

Jayson Tatum speaks about his ‘relaxed’ style

It was a summer to remember for the Celtics’ dynamic forward. He won a championship that long eluded him and followed it up with a gold medal in Paris. Then came the success off the court, which included becoming the brand ambassador of the luxury brand, Coach. In his partnership, the 26-year-old opened up about his fashion choices.

Standing at 6’8″, finding clothes was never easy for Tatum. Additionally, as a high-profile athlete, a priority while dressing is to be comfortable. Now, his grown fashion he claims is an extension of his character.

“Comfort is key, especially for someone my size. Growing up, it wasn’t always easy to find clothes that fit. Every year, my style evolves a little bit, but it’s always a reflection of my personality and taste. I’m laid-back, so my fits tend to reflect the same,” Tatum told Esquire.

In that regard, he appreciates how the NBA has grown as well. In the earlier days, there would be a strict dress court in the league. In 2006, they introduced a policy that only allowed players to wear business casual outfits. It changed in 2020, with th horizon expanding. Now there are no limits.

It has paved the way for NBA stars to express themselves fully. An example is Russell Westbrook sporting unique looks, Kyle Kuzma’s long-sleeved sweatshirt, and more. Jayson Tatum is happy he can let his personality run free throw his simple outfits. “I think style in the NBA has become a symbol for the different parts of our culture… Of course, players take it seriously, too. I’m glad the league allows guys to express themselves in that way,” he said.
