For any athlete, criticism is part of the deal. Although the ways may differ at times, the aspect of being called out remains constant. However, some get it worse than others and some get criticized in a fairly unique way. The most recent to catch something like that is Julius Randle. The 28-year-old received criticism for his poor shooting skills by a 23-year-old rapper.

Randle is no stranger to this, as he has received some pretty harsh words in the past as well, especially during his injuries. But, to be called out on a song by a rapper on the rise is not as common. Ken Carson, in his song Nightcore, used Randle as a reference, but unlike other shout-outs by rappers, the NBA star was being mocked.

The New York Knicks power forward has had a rough phase lately. Although his latest sneaker deal makes for a good kickstart for a new season, Randle’s injuries have been a real problem. But Randle is not one to let his injuries affect him, as back in May he made a miraculous comeback after a severe ankle injury. When asked about how he was handling the recovery, Randle had said “It doesn’t even really matter”. Although the fighting spirit is worth admiring, such things have a negative impact on an athlete’s game and Randle is no different.

When we compare his last season to the one before that, Randle has made tremendous progress, but it still falls short of expectations. His shooting skills, in particular, have been the point of discussion for a while. Mocking Randle in his shortcomings, Carson name-dropped him in his song off of his latest album A Great Chaos. The lyrics “I’m in New York, and I know these ni**as ain’t shooting sh*t like Julius Randle”, make fun of his shooting skills.

Randle had a 34.3% record last year from 3-point range. Going by the stats, the criticism seems valid, however, it will be interesting to see if he acknowledges it or not.

Julius Randle’s “bigger than basketball” deal

Sneakers are a huge part of the NBA world. Every popular athlete wishes to strike a sneaker deal and the ones who already have it, cherish it like an achievement. Randle is no different as he recently struck a deal with Skechers. Talking about his big deal, Randle said that this, for him, was “bigger than basketball” and that he is extremely grateful for the creative opportunity given to him.
