Why was ‘Winning Time’ canceled?

Winning Time had its fair share of problems. Upon launch, the series was met with disapproval from various factions within the Lakers of the 1980s. Magic Johnson, one of the main protagonists of the series, had said that he wasn’t consulted about the series. He also said that he had no interest in watching the series. Then Lakers owner, Jerry Bus, sued the production house on the basis of “a deliberate false characterization” and “baseless portrayal”.

Ever since the series was released, there were noises that the series wasn’t historically accurate and all the events were dramatized in order to garner more views.

The reason Netflix’s Last Dance was so successful was because of its historical accuracy. Along with that, it was also all the players that were consulted while making the docu-series. Critics accused Winning Time of not developing their main characters. They complain about the series failing to focus on the complex personalities that shaped the Lakers of that era. The series also covers a wide range of characters and storylines. And some viewers feel that it occasionally loses focus or spends too much time on less central aspects of the Lakers’ history.

Fans Are Enraged at HBO

Winning Time was a series based on the Lakers’ success in the 1980s. The team was led by superstars such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and James Worthy. The HBO series also focused on the rivalry between the Lakers and the Celtics. Between 1984 and 1988, the Lakers and the Celtics met three times in the NBA finals. With the Lakers, getting the upper hand twice in those meetings.

On a Reddit thread, anguished fans vent their frustration and agony towards HBO. One such enraged user wrote, “FU*K YOU HBO… This was the one thing I looked forward to every week. Announcing the cancelation the moment the last episode ended was brutal.” While another fan echoed the sentiment writing this support, “Yeah exactly. Succession is over, winning time canceled. 0 reason to pay for hbo anymore. Mfs can get views from some teenagers for that dogshit ass show with zendaya and other 30 year olds playing as high schoolers.”

The sudden exit of the show also caught fans off guard. Not only did the creators suffer, but it seems like HBO now has bad blood with Lakers fans. Meanwhile, other shows about the NBA are doing well right now. What remains to be seen is how the decision will impact the network. What are your thoughts on Winning time? Do you think it deserved a third season?
