After having a smooth start to the season, the Warriors are currently struggling to make a breakthrough in the Western Conference, falling back to 5th position in the Pacific Division. Last night, the Suns served them their second back-to-back loss, with a three-point difference.
With so much internal turmoil on the go for the Dub Nation, including Draymond‘s ejection, and the pressure of finding a solid standing as a team Klay Thompson is also dealing with his own woes. The shooting maestro’s future seems uncertain as it looks like the Warriors are not keen on the conversation surrounding a contract extension.

Thompson’s future is in question

Shams Charania of The Athletic points out that Thompson has been pushed to the shadows as he has not been given enough opportunities recently. He reiterates that, Last night, Andrew Wiggins, Klay Thompson, Kevon Looney, all were benched…..he (Thompson) deserves an opportunity to see this through, and he should have limitless opportunities.”
According to Shams, Thompson’s future with the Warriors is currently very uncertain.

The Warriors offered a deal, two years in a range of $48 million in an extension to Klay Thompson before the season, and now there’s no deal,” he said.

The Splash Brother has been with the Warriors for more than ten seasons, and in 2019, he inked a five-year, $190 million contract extension with the Dubs shortly after rupturing his ACL during the Finals. But by the looks of it now, the Dubs seem to be taking a different direction moving forward and Thompson might end up in free agency if the management does not make any major moves.

If we look back at last night’s game, young players like Jonathan Kuminga,21, and Brandin Podziemski, 20, saw more action than, say, Looney, Wiggins, and Thompson. So, Shams adds, “As much as we want to see the Warriors and their vets get a chance to ride this out till the sunset, we’re seeing two young players start to play more and I think it’s interesting.”

Thompson played 27 minutes last night and contributed seven points and five rebounds. This season, he has shown up for 22 of the 23 games the Warriors have played so far and averaged 15.4 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. As the season unfolds, we are yet to find out how his position in the team will pan out.
