Within one year, Grant Williams has been part of three franchises. Last offseason, he was signed by the Dallas Mavericks from the Boston Celtics. However, after only a three-month stint with the Mavs, he was traded again, this to the Charlotte Hornets. Many around the league were confused by this decision, but reports hinted at his possible beef with Luka Doncic. In addition to that, speculations stated that his “yapping” may have “rubbed people the wrong way.”

In a recent interview with the Athletic Williams opened up about his exit from Dallas. “I think it’s not that things didn’t work. I just think that I take most of the credit down there that I should have performed better,” said the 25-year-old.

He further added, “I think that as much as they relied on me and everything else, I didn’t necessarily come in the most prepared. But at the same time, I do believe that I still have great relationships with everybody there and I think that those guys are bound for something special in their growth.” He averaged 8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 47 games for the Mavericks.

It’s refreshing to hear Williams, reflect on his time in the Mavs. Especially, when there are so many narratives around what happened. His perspective offers us a window into his mindset and also his relationship with Luka. However, there was one incident in which Doncic showed his class when Williams came to “poke the bear.”

When  Luka Doncic decided to school Grant Williams

Maverick’s assistant general manager and vice president Michael Finley went to radio show, 105.3 The Fan, to narrate the incident. “He [Grant Williams] decided he wanted to get under Luka’s skin, He felt that Luka didn’t come that day ready to practice. So to make a long story short, they had a scrimmage going and he’s talking trash to Luka up and down the court, “said Finely.

“Finally, Luka says ‘OK’ and I tell you, Luka went on a 26-6 run by himself. You can ask anybody, I’m not exaggerating. It was like a 26-6 run by himself. He showed everything. The 3’s, the post-up, the floaters, everything by himself,” added the Mavs assistant general manager. So, one way or another Williams has learned not to mess with Doncic. Thus far, he isn’t looking like he will, considering he seems comfortable enough in his new home with the Hornets averaging 13.8 points.
