The Canadian baller Jamal Murray emerged as one of the lethal guards in the league in a very short span. The Denver Nuggets roped the star as the seventh pick in the 2016 NBA draft immediately after his freshman year. Since then the Mile High City hasn’t looked back as they won their first championship in his sixth year. And they are on the expressway to clinch the back-to-back.

Even though many considered the guard as one of the underrated players in recent times, he stamped his authority an MVP-level show in the 2023 playoffs. However, the superstar’s balling career ahead of the NBA draft still seemed to be a mystery. What prompted the Nuggets to rope him in after his freshman? Well, the answer is simple. He produced a record-breaking season for the University of Kentucky.

During his single college basketball season, Jamal Murray generated an average of 20 points, 5.2 pts, and a steal in 36 games. With these stats, he became the first Kentucky Wildcats player to record 20 PPGs in their history. Responding to the title question, no, Murray couldn’t win the NCAA Championship with his performance. Despite generating a dominant stat line, he couldn’t take the team deep into the NCAA tournament.

The team fell short in the second round against the Indiana Hoosiers in a 67-73 loss. Murray had an off night, dropping only 16 points with 7-18 FG. Nevertheless, he went on to win several honors under the guidance of the renowned coach John Calipari. During the season, he earned a spot in the top 25 for the honorary John R. Wooden Awards and also entered the All-American third-team selected by the Associated Press.

Along with these accolades, he also helped the team reach #1 for a brief period at the start of the season and also won the South Eastern Conference title. These accomplishments were enough for the Nuggets’ front office to recruit him.

Jamal Murray – a superstar guard to watch out for

Bubble Murray joined the Nuggets family a year after the Serbian star Nikola Jokić. Little did the duo know that would dominate the league with their combination. The 27-year-old showed his true colors during the 2020 NBA bubble when he averaged 24.4 points, 6.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 23 games. This stretch eventually turned into his nickname. He also turned the NBA world’s attention to his side with a 360-degree lay-up during that time.

However, it didn’t last long as he suffered a season-ending ACL injury in 2021. The team went ahead with the Joker in the following season, but couldn’t have the desired result. However, the exact when he made his return, the Nuggets went on to win their maiden championship.

He struggled with multiple injuries in the 2023-24 season and missed out on a few games, but the team managed to grab the second seed with a 57-25 record. Nevertheless, the star’s fitness is back up again during the postseason and the fans could expect a back-to-back. Moreover, Michael Malone said, “We’re not satisfied,” after winning the first championship, hinting at a possible dynasty.
