Michael Jordan brings to mind memories of flying dunks and clutch shots. He is without a doubt one of the best basketball players to ever grace a court. However, a competitive attitude that often verged on pettiness lurks behind the brilliant career and accolades. His legacy was as much shaped by his unrelentingly competitive nature, which occasionally bordered on pettiness, as it was by his extraordinary abilities. This very pettiness was, at times, what propelled him to new heights in the game.

A 27-year-old Dallas Mavericks star recently recalled an anecdote of his interaction with Michael Jordan’s alma-mater during a collegiate game. Unexpectedly, this alma-mater had a level of pettiness that was startlingly close to that of the basketball legend himself.

In a recent episode of Run Your Race, Indiana Pacers’ guard Bruce Brown joined Theo Pinson. And during his appearance, the host of the show couldn’t help but recall an NCAA game that they played as opponents. Brown admitted that the famed North Carolina Tar Heels had originally captured his heart.

Brown was a highly regarded prospect in the Class of 2016. And due to his abilities and potential, 247Sports had ranked him as the No. 23 overall player. As he dreamed of donning the Carolina blue, he made the crucial call to the North Carolina basketball team. Unfortunately for him, the Tar Heels told him that they had already made a decision. Instead of making an offer to Brown, they went for Seventh Woods, a guard with a No. 59 overall ranking in the same class.

Even though he was dismayed, the player then signed up to play for the Miami Hurricanes. And then in an eventful match against the UNC, Bruce Brown unleashed his MJ-like pettiness.

Brown delivered a breakout performance for the Miami Hurricanes. He guided his team to a 77-62 victory by dominating the floor against the tough #9 North Carolina. The star player recorded a stellar shooting percentage of 72.7% while scoring an incredible 30 points. In addition to being a scoring machine, he contributed five assists, four rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, showcasing his all-around ability.

Theo Pinson said, “We had a whole film session on Bruce the next day. It was like ‘he wanted to come here,  he k*lled y’all.'”

In a display of his pettiness, Bruce revealed that he posted an iconic picture on Instagram. “I got a picture,” he said. “It was seven of woods guarding me, huh! And I just.. it was like you know thinking Emoji. Only I knew but I had to post it on the gram.”

“Petty boy,” said Pinson. And Brown agreed.
