After two winning streaks, the Dallas Mavericks had a tough time on Wednesday night against the Toronto Raptors, losing by a wide margin of 127-116. This is just their second loss in the season, and it might set a negative tone for the team, whose performance was anything but impressive.

The Raptors’ strong defense made it difficult for the Mavericks to maneuver around, and their offensive force did not make it any easier for them either. This loss was really a blotch on their season stats so far, bringing them down to 6-2. But more than the stats, the performance was even more disappointing, especially according to Head Coach Jason Kidd, who did not hold back in the locker room after the match.

During the post-game interview, Kyrie Irving admits that Coach Kidd went ballistic in the locker room after the game. He went off on the team for being too gentle on the court and putting down their guards when it was actually needed. Due to a poor defense system, the Mavericks allowed 72 points in the paint to the Raptors. In the aftermath of the game, the energy inside the locker room must have been tense, as the team went through whatever they did wrong.

A disappointed Coach Kidd was straightforward and critical in the post-game pep talk with the team, telling the players that they were too soft. Kyrie Irving took it like a champ and said in the interview, “When you have your head coach calling you soft, you got to take that personally and take that as a challenge.” Kyrie’s justification is that he will take the Coach’s advice and come back stronger in the upcoming games.

The play that just wasn’t enough

The Mavericks were without their starting center Dereck Lively II, who was out due to an unspecified illness. Luka Doncic contributed 31 points while Kyrie dropped 22, but this was still not enough to overpower the highly offensive Raptors. Moreover, their elite defense disarmed Luka Doncic and Co.

The Mavs accumulated 11 turnovers in just the first half! Their game was sloppy and missing a flair that they usually display as a team. Players like Josh Green and Maxi Kleber also did not rise to the occasion and gave poor performances. It looks like the team has to seriously consider Coach Kidd’s harsh but heartfelt feedback in order to revamp themselves.
