Comparisons in sports are often unavoidable. However, the debate is usually restricted to players of one sport. For instance, in the GOAT conversation, Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James in basketball is a well-known topic among sports fans. More recently, Anthony Edwards and Tom Brady were compared to one another but the parameters are extremely bizarre as one can surmise.

Former Los Angeles Clippers star and Sports media personality Austin Rivers joined former NFL Punter and sports analyst Pat Macfee on his show to initiate this bizarre debate. It first started with Rivers saying, “I can take thirty players right now in the NBA and throw ’em in the NFL, but cannot take 30 NFL players and put ’em in the NBA.”

While Macfee vehemently disagreed with Rivers he did concede that Anthony Edwards, Russell Westbrook, and “Zoin (Williamson) would be fantastic.” Even the former Clippers Star did say that he had respect for the position of a quarterback. Amid this light banter, MacAfee started throwing in Names of NFL legends and who he thinks could have played in the NBA. “You’re telling me Deion(Sanders) his entire life focussed on basketball, you don’t think he would have been able to figure it out?” says the former Punter.

Rivers replied by saying, “Probably, whole life Probably yeah, he was a generational Athlete.” However, when MacAfee asks, “Tom Brady, you think he couldn’t have figured out the NBA?” Austin immediately replies with “Absolutely not” shaking his head. While other NBA legends like Allen Iverson had been the No 1 football player in their youth, not many NFL players have made it in the NBA. But what about Anthony Edwards? he has voiced his wishes to try out in the NFL.

Anthony Edwards’ NFL dreams

Ant-Man started his professional sporting career as a football player for the Atlanta Vikings. Interestingly, by age 10 he had become one the best running backs in the country. He had played the quarterback and cornerback positions as well. The switch to basketball came much later when he saw his older brothers hooping in the backyard and thought basketball was much cooler.

However, had he not switched, he would have been giving NFL fans something to root for, and according to an interview, he still might do that. “First I gotta handle my business in the NBA… as a time, Minnesota organization, we want to win a championship. After that, we’ll figure that out,” said Edwards about his plans to go to the NFL.  This excerpt is from a dialogue between Edwards and comedian Marco Summers on his “Open Thoughts” show, which aired in October of 2023.
