The 6’7″ youngster uses his height to his advantage since it gives him great field vision, allowing him to make good passes. While some regard LaMelo as a top-notch player in the league today, Jay King of The Athletic seems to disagree. As per him, LaMelo is the most overrated young player in the NBA.

LaMelo is Overrated?

On the The Athletic NBA Show, fans saw Zach Harper, Josh Huestis, and Jay King discussing the most overrated NBA player. Right off the bat, Jay makes his pick and names LaMelo. His reason? He thinks LaMelo is, “An inefficient chucker who makes great brilliant passes from time to time but also settles for bad shots; takes floaters that he doesn’t really make too often.”

However, it doesn’t end there for Jay, who continues, “He pisses away possessions, just pisses ’em away and you cannot have a point guard doing that“. Jay leaves some room for doubt, saying that it might come down to LaMelo being put with inefficient teams since a player’s environment also affects how well they perform. He then drags LaMelo’s height into the conversation and argues he should be playing good defenses, but it is lacking.

Taking over, Josh contributes his opinion on LaMelo and states that he always had mixed feelings about him. Josh’s main concern is that “If he [LaMelo] spends too much time in Charlotte or if Charlotte doesn’t take that step to become a good team, you’re gonna get to that point where he reaches that age where it’s he’s too far gone“. This comes after LaVar Ball recently talked about his sons LaMelo and Lonzo. Both budding NBA players have been struggling to get into the big league.

LaVar Ball on his sons

LaVar is known for constantly hyping his middle child, Gelo, as it looks like he is really keen on seeing him play in the NBA like his two brothers. Gelo plays for the Greensboro Swarm in the G League. In the interview with VladTV, LaVar himself ranks his sons and puts Gelo on top, as a better player than LaMelo. Saying he knows his boys as he trained them, LaVar is adamant that “Gelo better than Melo“, and that Gelo is bigger and stronger.

Well, we don’t know if we can take what Pappa Ball says at face value because he is always out advocating for Gelo. But maybe he should have thought twice before putting LaMelo under the bus, as others are already out to get him with the “overrated’ accusations.
