Despite his youth and limited playing experience, ‌the Cameroonian left a great impression on the Lakers star. Kobe recognized Joel Embiid’s potential and offered him words of encouragement, which indeed ignited a spark in the young player.

During a recent interview, Maverick Carter asked Joel Embiid whether he goes back to Cameroon during the offseason for lunch. It was then that Embiid made a surprising revelation. “I haven’t been back since Kobe,” responded Embiid. “Which is unfortunate, but before that I used to go back.”

The loss of his idol seems to have altered certain aspects of Embiid’s life, including his desire to return home during breaks from basketball.

Kobe Bryant’s sudden passing sent shockwaves throughout the sports world in January 2020. Alongside eight others, including his daughter Gianna, Kobe tragically lost his life in a copter crash in Calabasas, California.

Despite the challenges, Embiid remains focused on his career and family. “In a week, so they are all going to be here and I am going to eat some food,” he added, showcasing his commitment to maintaining family ties.
