‘Revamped’ and ‘lethal’ are the two new adjectives associated with the Houston Rockets this season. The team has managed to upset multiple strong franchises, including the Denver Nuggets, so far in the league. While the entire credits don’t go to their dynamic coach Ime Udoka, he sure does have a part in it. However, the current success of the 46-year-old may seem a notch under, compared to an unfortunate Kobe Bryant incident involving LeBron James’ ex-teammate that earned him his NBA debut.

Udoka made his debut in 2004 and played until 2011 for five different franchises, majorly for the San Antonio Spurs and Sacramento Kings. Nevertheless, he had an unusual way to enter the league with the Lakers jersey. Let’s find out more about the incident in detail.

LeBron James’ ex-teammate and Kobe Bryant pave the way for Udoka’s debut

The main reason that prompted Ime Udoka’s debut was Kobe Bryant‘s unfortunate shoulder injury. Months before his actual debut, Udoka attempted to get a spot in the star-studded Los Angeles Lakers team. However, his attempt came to an end 5 days before the season opener in 2003. Little did he know that he had an opportunity awaiting for him in the franchise.

Around January 2004, the Lakers star players like Karl Malone and Shaquille O’Neal succumbed to injuries. However, it was Kobe Bryant’s shoulder injury that allowed Udoka to make his competitive debut.

In the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Bryant injured his right shoulder and joined Shaq on the sidelines. Notably, it was Bryant’s first game against rookie LeBron James. And it was James’ ex-teammate, Kedrick Brown, who fell on Mamba’s shoulder and almost ended his career, reported the LA Times.

Following the injury, the Lakers signed a 10-day contract with Udoka and he went on to make his debut for the LA side against the Nuggets. With an average game time of 7 minutes, his journey with the Lakers came to an end after 4 games.

Coach Ime Udoka’s journey

He began his coaching career in the NBA as the assistant coach of the Spurs in 2012. He got his maiden call as the head coach in the 2021-22 season for the Boston Celtics. He almost won the chip in his debut season as the Celtics lost in the Finals against the Golden State Warriors. After his suspension in the following year, the Rockets have currently hired him as the head coach. Even though they stand as the 10th seed in the Western Conference, they have the potential to climb up the ladder any time soon. Notably, Udoka grabbed the attention of the NBA world, following his ejection in the last game after his confrontation against LeBron James.
