Is Devin Booker Mexican? NBA’s 26YO Superstar’s Heritage, Ethnicity and More

Devin Booker is among the foremost young talents in the league. The Phoenix Suns picked him 13th overall in the 2015 NBA draft. Since his debut for the Suns, the three-time all-star has blossomed into a well-rounded shooting guard. Winning the NBA all-star 3-point shooting contest in 2018. Last season he averaged 27.8 points per game, improving one whole point from the season prior.

However, among fans of the league, the ethnic heritage of the 26-year-old has always generated intrigue. To know all about the diverse cultural background of Phoenix Suns’ young superstar.

Devin‘s ethnicity is pretty diverse. From his mother’s side, he is Hispanic. His grandfather’s birthplace is Los Nogales, Mexico, a town located close to the Texas border he moved to Michigan later in life. While his grandmother hails from Puerto Rico. Veronica Gutiérrez, Booker’s mom, is a cosmetologist.

On the other hand, the three-time all-star’s father served as a point guard for Missouri. Melvin Booker earned the title of the 1994 Big Eight Player of the Year. His parents crossed paths when his father was a basketball player for the Continental Basketball Association’s Grand Rapids Hoops in the same town as Gutiérrez, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He frequently visited his father during the summer. At the age of 12, while in Milan with his father, he played one-on-one with Danilo Gallinari, who was a teammate of his father at Olimpia Milano. His father instilled in him the importance of having a high basketball IQ alongside natural athleticism. During his middle school years, Booker forged friendships with future NBA players D’Angelo Russell and Tyler Ulis.

It seems like his basketball background paid off. Recently, he was voted ahead of major players by NBA insiders. The list also included future Hall of Famers and Book surpassed them by a mile.

Book Voted Ahead of Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic

Devin Booker is among the elite few in the NBA who had the spark to dominate from the very beginning. In this year’s GM Survey, he stands as the unanimous victor for the position of the best shooting guard. He dominated the votes with 63% tipping in his favor. Meanwhile, the second position was held by Stephen Curry who got only 10% of the votes. Followed by Luka Dončić and Anthony Edwards at 7%.

This is the second time in a row the 26-year-old received this honor. Last year he received 45% of the votes while Doncic came in second with 28%, while Steph trailed at number three with 17% of the votes. However, entering his ninth season in the league, Booker undisputedly becomes the best shooting guard in the league. Last year he boasted an average of 27.8 points per game with an astonishing 60.1 in true shooting percentage.
