Four-time NBA Champion LeBron James is easily one of the most loved and hated players in the world. The LA Lakers superstar has collected several slandering nicknames throughout his career, but the ‘coach killer’ tag still sticks to him like a tattoo. The controversial question was recently raised once again in the latest episode of the Playmaker Podcast. This time, however, a former teammate of his stood with the answers.

The podcast had invited Miami Heat star Thomas Bryant, who had previously shared the court with Lebron James as a Laker in 2022-23. Answering the evergreen NBA question, Bryant noted, “Yeah, that’s funny as people say that because his IQ is so high, his IQ for the game of basketball is breathing, so people might assume.” Bryant then proceeded to narrate the leadership style that King James brings to every game.

He said, “He knows a lot but he’s not like he’s going to take over the coaching position. Like, say like, ‘I’m the coach’, not like this is like what’s that movie where he’s like ‘I’m the captain'” Instead, the Miami player noted that LeBron James helps the team stay focused and motivated throughout the match.

The ‘coach killer’ label has dogged LeBron James throughout his career. The reason behind this label is attributed to the various challenges head coaches face when working with James. Moreover, many head coaches have even ended up getting booted out of their teams because of a lack of chemistry with James, despite good coaching records.

The ‘coach killer’ tag was given to LeBron James after the firing of Paul Silas in 2005. Silas was leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a good regular season ending, with the team in the fifth playoff spot. However, with just 18 games left, he was fired and Brendan Malone, a longtime assistant coach back then, replaced him as the team’s interim coach. Interestingly, however, James already speculated that Silas would be fired.

The tag followed James in 2010 as well when Coach Mike Brown was fired from the Cavs, despite LBJ being a free agent at the time. It was later cleared that LeBron James didn’t have a say in the matter, even though the Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wanted his advice. But, the ‘coach killer’ monicker got embossed on James’ skin once again when Cleveland HC David Blatt was fired, a decision which was once again announced in the middle of the season.
