Ja Morant knew the only thing holding him back was his health. Over the last two seasons, he’s appeared in just 59 games. Before the new season began, Morant outlined a goal for himself. “I want to play 82 [games],” he said. The phenomenal athlete may still be able to reach those goals, but nothing can be said for certain after the latest news.

Damichael Cole reported, “Per Grizzlies team spokesperson: Ja Morant suffered a sprained left ankle in practice yesterday. He is considered week-to-week,”. It’s the worst start for the Grizzlies’ new head coach, Tuomas Iisalo, who could potentially be without Ja Morant for the first few games of the season.
The Grizzlies are also carrying other injuries. Brandon Clarke, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Zach Edey are also expected to be out for the start of the 2025-26 campaign. It complicates things for the Grizzlies, who are trying to bounce back after a disappointing finish to last season. At just 26, the injury concerns continue to mount for Ja Morant.

The details of his ankle injury haven’t been revealed. But it’s another ailment nonetheless. Ja Morant is an outstanding athlete and is a polished scorer. However, it seems his body is unable to handle the force and explosiveness. Morant has yet to appear in 70 games during a season in his career. With opening night looming, an ankle sprain puts his status on hold.

And nobody feels more troubled than the Grizzlies fanbase.
Ja Morant’s injury sends Grizzlies fans into a frenzy
The Grizzlies have twice ended the regular season as the number two seed in the West. Both of those times, injuries kept them from having a complete roster. And since the last two seasons, Ja Morant has suffered from wear-and-tear regularly. Hence, fans are convinced, “It never ends,”. The same problems have been haunting them.
A silver lining is that Morant suffered the sprain during the preseason. There are still a few weeks for the regular season to begin. That seems to be ample time to recover from the injury. However, one fan has an interesting theory about the entire situation.
“After some initial PTSD, I’ve come to the conclusion this is the most obvious “we need him healthy for opening day’ injury because they didn’t even put out a daunted PR tweet, they just told Damichael lol,” they wrote.
At this rate, there’s a good chance Ja Morant will be ready by opening night. But it’s not just him who is bitten by the injury bug. Since taking over, Iisalo hasn’t even had a chance to run his system with a healthy team. It’s probably going to continue this season. “Bruh what is up with the injuries on this team the past couple years? Can they get a new medical staff please?” one fan mentioned.

Aside from injuries, the Grizzlies also lost Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic. They don’t have a third star to keep the ship steady. Moreover, the West has grown exponentially in terms of competition. The Grizzlies desperately need Ja Morant and their other stars to stay healthy throughout the season.
However, Morant’s injury doesn’t have them feeling optimistic. “Basketball is actually awful,” a fan reacted to the news. Without much of their core, the Grizzlies are preparing for a rough preseason. The hope will be to have Morant ready by opening night, with some of the other starters joining the season.
