Even in his silence, he is a force to reckon with. Critics may doubt him, but Klay Thompson remains one of the league’s finest. When he left Stephen Curry behind at the Bay, some believed he would fail to adjust at the Dallas Mavericks. Yes, he had his moments of struggle in Jason Kidd’s regime. However, something that never changed was his leadership, which turned out to be helpful for the franchise.

Klay Thompson left the Warriors after failed contract talks, a smaller role, and a disrespectful final offer. In the summer of 2024, he chose a fresh start with Dallas, signing a three-year deal worth $50 million. But earlier this year, whispers of his growing frustration began to surface.

Now, on DLLS Sports, head coach Jason Kidd finally addressed the 35-year-old’s state of mind: “When you look at Klay, we didn’t bring it up. I thought he had an incredible season.” And it wasn’t just on the court that he showed up.

Kidd further expressed. “Not just on the floor, in the locker room, being a vet. Because there was so much speculation about him not wanting to be here. But he was nothing but a true pro.”

You could say that Thompson’s debut season as a Maverick was simply lackluster. He averaged 14.0 ppg, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. However, he took on the role of a leader in the Mavs’ locker room. After Luka Doncic’s trade, as Dallas raged at Nico Harrison, Klay stepped up to speak for the team. Fans were furious since February 2, and their flames added more blisters to the franchise. Thus, someone had to speak up. And, Klay took on the responsibility.

While Jason Kidd emphasized Thompson’s role on the team and his impact on their topsy-turvy 2024-25 season, Klay’s dad, Mychal, took to his X handle. No one has stepped away from calling out the Dallas Mavericks for their decision to trade Luka. So, why should Papa Thompson stay away? However, his jab wasn’t about Doncic, but the future draft pick (read: Cooper Flagg).

Amidst Jason Kidd’s confession, Klay Thompson’s dad hits the Mavs with a bitter taunt

Taking the top spot at this year’s draft lottery, the Dallas Mavericks are aiming for the stars. By stars, they mean Duke’s 18-year-old prodigy, Cooper Flagg. Although he is not yet eligible for the NBA Draft as of 2025, the league prohibits teams from contacting or publicly expressing interest in players before they qualify. Now, Klay Thompson’s dad, Mychal Thompson, took to his X handle to drop a tweet.

“And the good thing is Luka will only be 31 wen Dallas trades Coop to the Lakers in 5 years…” So, what do you think Papa Thompson is implying with his tweet? Simply put, it looks like he feels Cooper Flagg will meet the same fate as Luka Doncic. This means that five years later, after dedicating much of his career to the Mavs, Flagg will find himself traded to the Lakers when Nico Harrison shakes hands with Rob Pelinka at Ascension Coffee.

The past and future now stand face to face in Dallas. As Jason Kidd defends the present and Mychal Thompson questions what lies ahead, the Mavericks find themselves caught in reflection and speculation. Klay Thompson’s quiet strength remains their anchor. Yet even that may not silence the echoes of doubt. After all, in this city of stars, legacy is always one bold decision away.
