Tonight, as the Dallas Mavericks played the Oklahoma City Thunder, Cooper Flagg was hard to miss. Unfortunately, this wasn’t just his performance that caught attention. Observers saw him sitting on the sideline, his left shoulder saddled with a huge wrap. Fans were concerned, and they got an update after the game from head coach Jason Kidd.

Kidd, in the post-game interview, acknowledged the wrap on Flagg’s shoulder, saying, “He got hit early in the game with the shoulder,” Kidd said postgame. “So, just understanding we went with someone else, and they picked him up. We had an opportunity to tie the game.” The forward was knocked by an OKC player early in the first quarter, and the wrap stayed on the whole contest.

When asked about Flagg’s status specifically, Kidd emphasized caution over alarm. “His shoulder, that’s sore. But we’ll see how he feels tomorrow,” he said. “He played through it. He’s a tough kid, but we’ll have more tomorrow.” While the Mavericks haven’t issued a formal update on Flagg’s condition, Kidd’s tone suggests that the injury is not immediately concerning and that the organization is taking a day-to-day approach with his soreness.

The timing is tough for Dallas, which has been leaning especially hard on Flagg as its lead playmaker, who has had mixed results. Flagg’s defensive impact, however, is not replaceable for the Mavs, who already have a defensively lacking point guard core. If Flagg ends up missing time, it could alter the rhythm around Anthony Davis.

Still, the takeaway from Kidd’s comments is clear: Flagg is a key piece worth conserving. Despite rough performances, the rookie has shown maturity through his poise, effort, and now, the ability to tough it out. Dallas now seems committed to playing the long game with their young talent.

Cooper Flagg Anticipates Playing Wednesday Despite Shoulder Issue

Cooper Flagg himself also weighed in on the injury and his performance against the Thunder. According to ESPN‘s Tim McMahon, “Cooper Flagg said he expects to get scans on his left shoulder to be sure, but he anticipates being available Wednesday vs. Pacers.”

His reassurance signals that the injury is likely minor and that he should be back on court very soon.

He also pointed to a specific reason for his poor performance tonight. “He attributed his off night (2 points, 2 rebounds, 0 assists) to being “flat” in second game of first back-to-back.”

Flagg shot just 1-9 from the field and 0-3 from three, and looked significantly hampered on the court, especially during one viral sequence where Thunder center Chet Holmgren dunked on him.

Moving forward, if Flagg ends up missing time, there are a few different options the Mavs have to consider. D’Angelo Russell is a solid offensive presence, despite his struggles tonight, and already has chemistry with Anthony Davis from their Lakers days.

Naji Marshall is another solid option, providing a blend of ball-handling, defensive presence, and catch-and-shoot offense. Caleb Martin also could be under consideration for size and defense, but doesn’t have the same playmaking instincts that Flagg does. For now, all we can do is wait for an update.
