Marcus Smart traded to the Grizzlies

After their defeat in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics traded Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis adds size and versatility, which the Celtics were in much need of. But the tradeoff in getting Porzingis was losing their leader. The Celtics already have the reigning 6th man of the year, Malcolm Brogdon, to fill the void left by Smart. But the team not only lost Marcus’ playing talents but his intangibles as well. They lost his leadership, tenacity, and grit in the process. Marcus averaged 11.5 points, 6.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game last season.

While it’s a loss for the Celtics, it provides a massive boost to the Grizzlies title hopes. Smart is a vocal leader on the court and the Grizzlies need a player like him. The Grizzlies lost league ‘villain’ Dillon Brooks after the GM decided not to re-sign him. Smart actually helps in covering up the defensive void left by Dillon Brooks. Smart also provides cover for Ja Morant till the time he is suspended. The Memphis Grizzlies will be an interesting team to follow this upcoming season, as there are so many narratives surrounding the franchise.

Celtics’ Fans React to Smart Trade

It is true that Marcus was the emotional leader of the Celtics, but the fact of the matter is that he was offensively a very limited player. And the Celtics needed a player that could produce offensively in the playoffs when it matters the most. The Celtics fans took to social media to give their two cents on the trade.
