Boston Celtics player Jayson Tatum has been progressing steadily throughout his NBA career. In the seven seasons that he has devoted to the Boston Celtics, the 25-year-old has managed to reach four Conference Finals, came twice within a game of the NBA Finals and has been named to an All-Star team at least five times. More recently, his efforts in pulling of an average of 27.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists during the regular season has helped in putting his team as the number one seed in the Eastern Conference Table.

In light of this wonderful progression, ‘The Green Mamba’ may very well be on track to receive the MVP title for himself. However, Tatum’s past seems to be catching up with him and causing a hinderance on his road to the MVP. The player noticed it as well and was quick to address it.

A few hours ago, the official X account of Celtics on CLNS published a video. It featured Jayson Tatum sitting down for a Q and A session after his team helped defeat the Chicago Bulls by a score of 129-112. Since Tatum ended up securing 25 points for his team during the game, much of the focus was on him.

During the session, Tatum was seen discussing the race for the MVP title, including how his competitors have been “putting up ridiculous numbers every night”. At the same time, he expressed his frustration with the people on TV who underestimated his ability to secure the title because of something that happened two years ago.

“I just had a problem with some people on TV saying the reason why I won’t win this year is because of something that happened two years ago,” said Tatum in a statement. “That was my only disconnect.”

Through his statement, the Celtics player made it clear that he does not mind if he is not considered the best player of the season. He does mind, however, if people are judging his current performance based on the past.

Stephen Curry took Jayson Tatum’s chance to secure the MVP title

The incident that has been forming a cloud of judgement over Tatum’s ability to secure the MVP title occurred back in 2022, during the NBA Finals. The Celtics had defeated their Eastern Conference Rivals and managed to reach the last stage in order to compete against the Stephen Curry led Golden State Warriors.

The Celtics managed to go 2-1 against the Warriors, with a younger Tatum taking the charge. Despite this drawback, Stephen Curry was confident that the tide would turn in their favour. In a recently revealed statement, the then three-time NBA champion was heard saying a four worded phrase to Celtics forward Juawan Morgan: “Enjoy y’all last win”. The statement turned into reality, and the Warriors ended up winning the next three games. Not only was the championship title lost but the finals MVP title also ended up going to Curry.

Given that the past should remain the past, Celtics fans maintain the hope that this year may turn out different from what they witnessed back in 2022.
