The Atlanta Hawks are teetering on the edge of falling out of the play-in picture. Not what they had planned after failing to advance past the first round of the playoffs for the past two years. The pressing dilemma for the Hawks now is whether to run it back with the same team once more or opt for a complete overhaul. Recent rumblings suggest they may be leaning towards the latter, with whispers of Trae Young being potentially on the trading block next summer. This revelation has stirred the interest of some teams across the league, including the Los Angeles Lakers. After narrowly missing out on roping in Dejounte Murray, the Lakers might now be interested in his former teammate.
Despite the Lakers’ interest, their hopes of landing the 3x NBA All-Star could be dashed yet again. As per former Atlanta Hawks guard, Trae Young has his sights set elsewhere.

Believe it or not, the rumors started to take shape because of a smile. When Young was asked about what kind of player Wemby needs around him, he replied with a grin, “The kind of player that can help him win a championship, make his job easier. That’s the type of player he needs.”

This cryptic statement then ignited debates about whether Young could be the missing piece in Wembanyama’s championship puzzle. Judging by his talent, the odds seem in favor of that possibility.
Is Trae Young the answer to the Spurs’ dilemma?
While Wembanyama’s individual statistics have been exceptional, they have failed to translate into victories for San Antonio. Adding a point guard and playmaker to the team could add another dimension to the Spurs’ offense. Young could supply the Spurs with a source of paint pressure and a barrage of three-pointers. Young’s presence would not only elevate the Spurs’ offense but also benefit Wembanyama. With Young in the lineup, the potential Rookie of the Year would thrive on alley-oops and easy finishes from pick-and-roll plays. Add to it the fact that with Young in the lineup, the spacing would be very different, and teams would not be able to double the Wemby that easily.

While Trae Young’s subpar defense has been a point of contention, the Spurs’ lineup featuring Wembanyama, Jeremy Sochan, and Devin Vassell could offset this concern. With a defensive core already in place, having a playmaker of Young’s caliber leading the offense could be a risk worth taking for San Antonio.
