Yesterday, the Los Angeles Lakers finally decided to part ways with Darvin Ham. However, the writing was on the wall for Ham and his future with the Lakers, following their premature exit in the playoffs. Many pointed their fingers at Darvin Ham for not making in-game adjustments. Even his players sometimes complained about the lack of coaching and instructions that Ham handed out during games.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the Lakers’ hierarchy promptly parted ways with Darvin Ham. Moreover, Lakers’ GM Rob Pelinka also fired Ham’s entire coaching staff. Now, Pelinka will commence his search for the fourth head coach during his tenure. Several coaches have been linked to the Lakers’ job. However, the one name that stands out is LeBron James’ co-host from the Mind The Game podcast, JJ Redick. Despite having no prior coaching experience, JJ Redick finds himself as the favorite for the Lakers’ vacant head coaching job.
However, NBA insider Rich Eisen may have suggested a reason behind JJ Redick’s chances of becoming the head coach of the Lakers on the latest episode of the Rich Eisen Show. The 54-year-old veteran journalist stated that the 3rd seat on ESPN’s broadcasting team is the key to grabbing a head coaching gig in the NBA. He said, “The drummer from Spinal Tap always either imploded, or something happened to the drummer. So, that is the 3rd chair of the NBA on ESPN on ABC broadcast team right now. Let’s just say, if you wanna be a head coach in the NBA, take that job.”

Rich Eisen made this observation because, before JJ Redick, Doc Rivers transitioned from ESPN’s broadcasting team to coaching the Milwaukee Bucks. JJ Redick then took over Rivers’ spot on the team. Now, Redick finds himself in a similar position.
Who could be the Los Angeles Lakers’ next head coach?
Being the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers is one of the most prestigious jobs in the league. However, with that comes a lot of pressure to succeed and win titles. While some rise to the occasion, others falter under the weight of expectations. Therefore, the Lakers’ top brass must follow a well-thought-out plan, rather than an instinctive decision.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, “Sources tell me and Jovan Buha an extensive search will commence soon, with candidates such as Mike Budenholzer, Kenny Atkinson, JJ Redick and, if he becomes available, Ty Lue among others.” With several talented coaches linked to the job, it won’t be easy to narrow it down to just one person. However, that’s exactly what the Lakers’ hierarchy must do.

Ty Lue remains the ideal candidate for the job, as he has prior championship-winning experience. He also coached LeBron James during Cleveland’s 2016 title triumph. But snatching him from the grasps of their fierce city rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers, won’t be easy. JJ Redick has also emerged as a favorite because of his close ties with LeBron. However, he’s a relative novice in the coaching department, and that might deter the Lakers’ management from pursuing him. What are your thoughts? Who would be the Lakers’ next head coach?
