The Atlanta Hawks faced an early setback in their game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Their superstar, Trae Young, was ruled out of the game due to illness. Despite this, the team displayed immense determination, fighting relentlessly throughout the game. Joel Embiid came in with guns blazing, scoring 17 points in the opening quarter.

Atlanta made a strong comeback in the second quarter, with Trae Young‘s replacement, Bogdan Bogdanovic, contributing 13 points. It turned out to be their most impressive quarter. However, an under-armed Hawks couldn’t contain Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, as they combined for 68 points for a 125-114 victory.

Embiid commenced the game with the potential for a 50-point performance. However, he concluded with 38 points in 36 minutes. What prevented him from achieving back-to-back 50-point games was a second quarter in which he failed to score. However, with his son and wife seated in the front row, he regained focus at the start of the third quarter. Additionally, he proved effective on the defensive end, particularly during the 10-2 Sixers run where he patrolled the paint, disrupting and blocking shots.

In the third quarter, Embiid contributed 13 points, and in the fourth quarter, he added the last 8 points while confidently sinking free throws despite his knee injury.

The Hawks preyed on each opening

Despite Trae Young being sidelined for the Hawks, they managed to keep the game incredibly close until the final minutes. Relentlessly searching for any vulnerabilities in the 76ers’ offense and defense, they fought for second-chance points, resulting in an impressive 45-point second quarter against Philly’s 27.

On the scoring front, the Hawks didn’t exhibit anything extraordinary. However, they capitalized on the Sixers’ self-inflicted tendencies to stay in the game. A technical foul from Patrick Beverley and Maxey’s foul on Bogdanovic during a three-point attempt propelled the Hawks to a late 107-104 lead in the fourth quarter.

Furthermore, during a drive, Embiid seemed to have injured his left knee, limping afterward. Despite this, he chose to tough it out and complete the game. Had Embiid opted to sit out during the final minutes, it is easy to say that the game might have swung on Hawks’ side.

Together, the Sixers are a force

While Tyrese Maxey dazzled with his 30-point, 7-assist performance, the success of the 76ers comes from more than just two of their top scorers. The collective intensity of the Sixers surged after a lackluster second quarter, propelled by Patrick Beverley’s relentless ball pressure and Kelly Oubre Jr.’s pursuit of second-chance points.

Oubre extended his impact into the fourth quarter, actively seeking steals and efficiently capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Even though Embiid and Maxey were crucial in closing out the game, Oubre’s on-ball threat provided the Sixers with an additional layer of offense.
