Two notable centers went toe-to-toe at the Wells Fargo Center. Victor Wembanyama, touted as the ‘greatest prospect had one of his best games as a rookie. However, Joel Embiid, well, he turned the dial up to maximum. The leading scorer of the league put forward his true prowess. Completely unhinged, the University of Kansas alumnus exploded for a career night.

Embiid was dominant, pure, and full of finesse in his historic performance. No matchup slowed him down. The points came to him no more easily than it is for him to make a free throw. The Process went into the mythical ‘zone’ from tip-off. He had a monster the first half, but what followed was simply breathtaking.

Joel Embiid leaves his college coach lost for words

It was no ordinary night at the Wells Fargo Center. Before the much-awaited matchup against Victor Wembanyama, Embiid was leading the scoring race by a fair margin. He was averaging 35 points a night, the most since James Harden‘s 2019 MVP season. The Sixers star center has become so overpowering that scoring just seems easy.

It might be an illusion for us normal fans. If it wasn’t, you might question reality after what happened today.

In the 76ers’ 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs, Joel Embiid exploded for a career-high 70 points. In a three-point scoring era, Embiid only scored 3 of his 70 points from beyond the arc. His mid-range superiority dictated the pace for the entire night. Shooting 58% from the field, he was simply unbearable for the Spurs.

Kansas coach Bill Self, who himself had guided the college troops to a win, joined ESPN for an interview. In Embiid’s 8 months at his alma mater, Self oversaw his progress. When asked if he had witnessed Embiid’s masterful performance, Self said he had only seen the first half. Embiid had 34 by that time.

Before Self could try to piece together the entire story, the ESPN host told him Joel Embiid had dropped 70 points. Unsurprisingly, he took some time to pick up his words. After finally processing it, he responded in a way Joel Embiid might appreciate.

Embiid surpasses Wilt Chamberlain

Over the past few seasons, several players have gone past the 70-point mark. But don’t let that fool you. It takes tremendous focus and will to get to that point. In Embiid’s case, he went off in a game that was only separated by 10 points. He only became the ninth player in NBA history to score 70 or more. As far as the Sixers’ record books go, it is the highest tally any Sixers player has ever reached. He beat out Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 68 on December 16, 1967.
