During the exhibition games, it was evident that Joel Embiid faced skepticism about starting. However, Coach Steve Kerr was resolute in giving him a spot in the lineup. For the most part, Embiid seemed to struggle with the international standards. His difficulties were apparent, especially during the first group stage game, where things worsened. Yet, Kerr understood the reality behind the scenes. Embiid managed only 4 points in the 11 minutes he played against Serbia, but Kerr remained confident as the team advanced.

Steve Kerr explained Embiid’s recent struggles, citing illness as a significant factor. “I think Joel struggled last night, but it wasn’t a shock given that he had been sick the previous couple of days. He was really coming before that, his last couple of games of the friendlies were his best and so I feel good about him going forward,” said Kerr. Indeed, Embiid posted strong performances against South Sudan and Germany before the team arrived in Paris.

There were no updates on Embiid’s health before the game against Serbia. He even attended the opening ceremony, and soon after, he seemed to be under the weather. Despite this, the Process was all set to play. His performance, however, fell short, and the crowd was harsh. Embiid, who could have played for France due to his French passport, chose to join Team USA, with his teammate Bam Adebayo noting the boos from the crowd.

Despite the unfortunate situation for the 30-year-old, Steve Kerr and the coaching staff have faith in him as they prepare for their game against South Sudan. This will be Team USA’s toughest matchup in the group stage, given their recent clash. Embiid’s presence in the starting lineup on Thursday is crucial, but Kerr might consider changes if necessary. With Kevin Durant back in the lineup, having led the team against Serbia with 23 points, he could replace Embiid if needed.

KD can replace Joel Embiid

The recent starting lineup featured LeBron, Steph, Holiday, Booker, and Embiid. If Embiid is unavailable, Durant can step in, with Anthony Davis possibly taking Booker’s place to complete a formidable lineup. This lineup promises unlimited scoring potential and will be tested against the Sudanese, potentially changing the game thanks to the Slim Reaper.

The Americans are favored to top Group C, with South Sudan being their main challenge. It remains to be seen if Embiid will be healthy for Thursday’s game. If not, Coach Kerr will decide on the best replacement. What are your thoughts on Embiid’s performance? Do you believe he’ll recover in time for Thursday’s game?
