Things got heated during the Phoenix Suns’ thrashing of the Golden State Warriors last night. The entire team was clinical as Phoenix finished won the game 130-105. However, the team’s performance wasn’t the main talking point after the matchup. No, it was actually Kevin Durant getting into it with a former player that intrigued everyone.

KD was caught flapping gums at former NBA player, Gary Payton Sr, who was there to cheer on his son. After the game, Kevin Durant made quite the awkward admission. He was asked about the situation, and when the reporter asked him a specific question, KD shot back, asking if the reporter had heard him.

They replied saying that his words were on TV. Leading KD to say, “I was mic’d up tonight too for the Netflix…You might gotta wait till that come out. Let’s see the back and forth. But yeah, I said something close to that, I think.”

It seems in the flow of everything during the game, Durant forgot that he was mic’d up as a part of the Starting 5 Season 2 cast. And we will probably get to find out exactly what was said when the new season comes out. Quite the awkward slipup from KD, starting a verbal spat on national TV.

Nonetheless, KD did reveal that he actually had nothing but the utmost respect for Gary Payton Sr. However, Durant also wanted to ensure the former Miami Heat point guard knew how good he was. Let’s see what he had to say about his relationship with the old guard.

Kevin Durant elaborates on his relationship with Gary Payton Sr. and other former players

Now, if you caught the moment between Kevin Durant and Gary Payton Sr., you probably they have a contentious relationship. After all, no one gets into it on live TV if they don’t. However, it seems that our assumption is incorrect. KD actually let us in on the details of his relationship with Gary and other players of his generation.

Durant revealed the chip on his shoulder when it came to interacting with players from the previous generation. “We were all in the same room, Team USA, and the first thing I said was he couldn’t guard me, too small. Them dudes that he played back in the wasn’t close to me,” said Durant about how it all started. And then he revealed why they started going at each other on live TV.

“I was just talking crazy talk and I picked up from there, and I love that I can have that rapport with the older generation of players and let them know that I’m like lil bro to them, you know? I’ve always looked up to them my whole life. So that was fun. I got major respect for GP,” ended KD, revealing how much he looked up to them.

It seems Durant was not trying to disrespect or demean Gary Payton Sr. In fact, all he was trying to do was get his licks in against someone he respected. However, we’d advise that Durant pick a moment when he isn’t mic’d up on live TV for the next time he decides to chirp at an NBA Legend!
