As expected, the Philadelphia 76ers are making the noise on deadline day. After sealing the deal with the Indiana Pacers, they have now agreed to a new one with the Detroit Pistons. The 7ers are parting ways with their veteran wing, Danuel House Jr. As per sources, the Sixers will also send out a 2024 second-round pick via the New York Knicks to Detroit. The team is not expected to bag any player in return. Instead, this move is aimed at creating a salary cap cushion to potentially add players to the buyout market when the deadline concludes.

According to Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports, this deal has allowed the Sixers to create a $4.3 million TPE. Consequently, the team now has the cap space to rope in Charlotte Hornet’s Kyle Lowry if he becomes available in a contract buyout.

This isn’t the first time Kyle Lowry has been associated with Philadelphia. He was previously linked to the Sixers back in 2021 when he was still with the Toronto Raptors. However, rather than making a move to the Wells Fargo Center, Lowry ended up being traded to the Miami Heat in exchange for Precious Achiuwa and Goran Dragic, primarily due to his high asking price. That won’t be a problem for Daryl Morey anymore. Acquiring Lowry via trade would have posed challenges for the Sixers, particularly due to his expiring contract valued at $29.7 million. However, such concerns would no longer be relevant if the 37-year-old’s contract was to be bought out by Charlotte.

The former champion would make a valuable addition to the second unit due to his outstanding ball-handling, passing skills, and consistent three-point shooting. Furthermore, the Sixers are in need of additional guard depth to complement Patrick Beverley off the bench.

However, despite his impressive track record, the 6-time NBA All-Star is currently averaging 8.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4 assists this season. It’s worth noting that Lowry’s age and declining production suggest he would excel in a more restricted role, which might be challenging if Joel Embiid is absent.

The Sixers attempt to stay afloat amid Joel Embiid’s injury

While no one would be able to match Embiid’s production on the floor, the Sixers, in an attempt to bolster the backcourt, traded for Buddy Hield in exchange for Marcus Morris, Furkan Korkmaz, and three future second-round picks. In the reigning MVP’s absence, the Sixers need all the help they can get to stay afloat.

The team has lost all three games they’ve played since Embiid went down with a knee injury, tumbling to fifth place in the East. He isn’t expected to get any serious playing time before the regular season ends; therefore, the team must make judicious use of their two available roster spots if they aim for a deep postseason run.
