Lakers GM Rob Pelinka welcomed Spencer Dinwiddie into the LA side. Hours ago, the duo were spotted amidst the crowd, watching the Lakers-Pelicans game. While the sighting ignited the obvious trade rumors, they made it official within a few hours. The front office went for the mid-level exception and roped in Dinwiddie, exercising the $1.6 million worth luxury tax.

Following the deal, Pelinka dropped a special welcome message to the star. He said, “Spencer is returning to his roots and the city where his journey began… His play-making and aggressiveness from the guard position provides us valuable depth as we continue our strong push toward the back-half of the season.”

Ahead of the trade deadline, the Brooklyn Nets traded Dinwiddie to Toronto Raptors for Dennis Schroder. Reportedly, the 30-year-old wasn’t happy with his role in the Nets fold. After spending roughly around 4 seasons with the Nets in the last years, he has averaged around 15 points.
Following his trade to the Raptors, several reports suggested that he was interested in moving either the Dallas Mavericks or the LA Lakers. Eventually, he was also spotted, witnessing both Mavs and Lakers games, sending strong signals about his preferred team.
Finally, it was the Purple & Gold franchise, which stole the deal. One may wonder how the LA side roped in the star despite having a cramped roster and low salary cap space. Unlike other leagues, the NBA allows its franchise to go beyond their cap space, but it comes with the price. The Lakers took the highway to pay a luxury tax worth $1.6 million to play the point guard in the remainder of the season.

Dinwiddie all set to don the Lakers uniform
After a hot and cold road run, the Lakers are back in their groove with a much-need home win. Right before the trade deadline, the Lakers were in intense trade talks to rope in Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks.
On the other hand, LeBron James’ social media post supporting Trae Young also ignited a speculation that the Lakers might try their hand with the star point guard.

However, all those speculations died down when the Lakers breached trade deadline. And out of nowhere, the front office pulled in Dinwiddie and he expected to take the court against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday.
