No one’s doing it like LA’s star athletes. Keenan Allen put his name in the record books with his 956th career catch on Sunday night. The Los Angeles Chargers star surpassed his old friends in doing so. And LeBron James is here for it. While the Lakers superstar remains sidelined (with somewhat of a hope of his return), he joined Chargers nation in celebrating the wide receiver.

James expressed his excitement in a single tweet. “CONGRATULATIONS @Keenan13Allen on the record bro!! 🔥🔥🔥🫡” which is basically what LA fans are feeling right now.

The Chargers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 25-10 on Sunday night with the help of Allen’s record. Allen’s new record surpassed former teammate, Antonio Gates, who racked up 955 career catches with the Chargers during his 16-year Hall of Fame career. Allen is now the all-time receptions leader as of this game.

Allen was mentored by Gates during the early years of his career from 2013 to 2018. Surpassing Gates was one of 33-year-old’s goals this season who came into training camp with 904 catches.”That’s the priority one,” Allen said. “Definitely trying to catch Gates.”

Allen’s career moment got a standing ovation from the entire SoFi Stadium and cheers from his teammates. Los Angeles is just as thrilled for their football star while it eagerly waits for its Lakers star’s return.

Los Angeles has expectations from its returning superstars

LeBron James has been on the Keenan Allen hypetrain for a while. Four years ago, King James put the NFL on notice. “Ballgame Keenan Allen!! He soooo good!! Underrated still,” he tweeted in 2021 when Allen was still with the Chargers. They didn’t exactly listen.

After a decade with the Chargers, Allen was briefly sent to the Chicago Bears in 2024. He returned to Los Angeles on a one-year, $8.5 million contract this year with a lot of anticipation.

He’s not the only player to watch in Los Angeles. With Luka Doncic playing his first full season with the Lakers, fans wanted to see star-studded action. Unfortunately, a possibly golf-aggravated sciatica condition has put LeBron James on the sidelines, watching the Dodgers win the World Series and Keenan Allen reclaim his position within the Chargers.

In his absence, Austin Reaves and Deandre Ayton filled the void while Doncic kept a high-scoring momentum. It’s still been a roller-coaster start to the shorthanded Lakers’ season. After losing 122-102 to the Hawks on Saturday, the team is down 7-3 without Bron, AR, and Gabe Vincent.

LA sports lovers predict (or wish) that Bron will be back before November 28, when the NBA Cup group stage closes. James is on track for some Keenan Allen-esque records of his own upon his return. But as the date of his return inches closer, questions loom about LeBron James’ position within the Lakers.
