Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks are embarking on a new era for their dynasty. They made a bold move by parting ways with first-year head coach Adrian Griffin midseason and bringing in the seasoned veteran, Doc Rivers. A significant shift in the Bucks’ defensive prowess prompted the decision. Despite having one of the best records in the NBA before Griffin’s departure, their defensive ranking had plummeted under his leadership. They were a top 5 defensive team last year and transitioned to being among the bottom few this year. This led to the spotlight shifting to Rivers, boasting over 20 years of coaching experience and a championship title.

Ranked 9th on the all-time win list among coaches, Rivers is anticipated to add another winning chapter to the Bucks’ legacy. Both superstars Giannis and Damian Lillard have placed their trust in the coach to guide them toward fulfilling their championship aspirations. Now, an NBA legend also validates Doc’s move.

Bill Walton shows admiration for the new Bucks

Rivers faced a formidable challenge in his debut game, not only having to navigate the dynamics of the Bucks’ roster but also squaring off against the defending champions, the Denver Nuggets. Surprisingly, the Bucks held their own in the first quarter, leading 26-25. This led NBA legend Bill Walton to remark, “Milwaukee looks like they invented the game,” highlighting the positive impact of Rivers’ arrival.

The legend pointed to Milwaukee’s aggressive ball movement and ability to convert shots as the key factors. Moreover, he also cited crispness in their approach and giving opportunities to other players in better positions throughout the first quarter as the reasons for his statement.

In the opening quarter, the Bucks maintained a narrow edge over the Nuggets. Damian Lillard contributed only 3 points, but Giannis Antetokounmpo showcased a well-rounded performance with 6 points and 6 rebounds. However, the Nuggets stayed close, nearly matching the field goals and challenging the Bucks in the paint. Despite this, the Bucks’ lead was fueled by their efficient shooting, coupled with three early blocks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is the NBA’s Player of the Week

Before the Nuggets game, Giannis was dealing with illness. However, that didn’t deter him from taking the court. The same trend is consistent for the Greek Freak throughout the week. He has been notching strings of triple-doubles and propelling himself up the ladder in the MVP race. The impressive stretch has earned him the NBA Player of the Week award. This marks his 23rd Player of the Week title and the second one for the season.
