After their exit from the playoffs, both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers have been utilizing their time off to plan their next season. Recent developments suggest that the Clippers’ efforts to retain their star player Paul George may be in vain and Philadelphia seems to be emerging as a potential destination for PG.

Despite Los Angeles’ various efforts to negotiate with their Shooting Guard, they have been unable to sign an extension. And now that George hits free agency this summer, other teams are ready to swoop in and acquire the player.

Will Paul George have to leave home for title ambitions?

For PG, the decision is difficult. Being brought up there, Los Angeles holds a special place for him. He has been playing with the team since 2019. Moreover, his family ties run deep, with parents and children all residing in the city. The situation is more complex when his mother’s health is considered. She suffered a stroke a few years ago, and is only able to attend his games because of the proximity.

Regardless, his ambitions of winning the championship affect his decision. Although the Clippers are a well-structured team, their roster isn’t getting any younger and the injuries are proof. Teaming up with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia could offer PG a real shot at an NBA title.

Incidentally, according to Daryl Morey, President of Basketball Operations, the Sixers have been looking for a “wing who can play at a high level in the playoffs.” Paul George might be the answer to their problems. And the Sixers are confident about their comeback, Morey said, “Joel, Tyrese, and Nick give me the confidence that we’re going to have a good shot. I’ve just got to keep working hard to put us in an even better position, and we have an opportunity to do that this offseason.”  Morey will also be consulting his star players, Embiid and Tyrese about the team’s future.

The Clippers want PG back

According to ESPN NBA reporter, Lawrence Frank, President of Los Angeles said that the Clippers want George and James Harden back but also understands that George will end up a free agent like Harden if he doesn’t negotiate an extension with Clippers. But the team hasn’t lost hope. Frank said, “We believe the window is still open” with regards to Paul George.

The Clippers want to focus on working towards a veteran team with their young players. “The hardest thing in team building, at least in our opinion, is to get elite players. We feel we have three of them,” said Frank. Their big three; Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Paul George. Losing PG would deeply affect Los Angeles.

PG has a difficult decision to make. The answer to which can alter his career forever. All eyes will be on him as hits free agency soon. Will he choose to stay loyal to the Clippers and stay close to family or will he make the tough call and start a new chapter in Philadelphia? Only time can tell. Adding his family ties to the mix, complicated would be an understatement. What do you think about this big decision facing Paul George?
