Renowned sports media personality Colin Cowherd recently released another episode of his long-running podcast. During the same, he discussed the recent playoffs clash between Luka Dončić’s Dallas Mavericks and the LA Clippers. Despite the Mavericks allegedly looking to be the favorite to win the game, the Clippers defied expectations and secured the win to their name by a score of 109-97.

The podcaster proceeded to state that multiple factors led to the eventual result, despite MVP contenders, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving putting up an impressive total. “It was just like, home team, lot of energy, super physical, old guys”, said Cowherd when discussing the advantage that the Clippers held. “Dallas just wasn’t quite ready to play”.

Cowherd’s guest co-host and fellow podcaster Jason Timpf agreed with the statement, claiming that the indications of the Clippers’ physicality were apparent right from the “very first possession”. He highlighted how Doncic was dribbling “around on the perimeter” while his rival James Harden took charge by “screaming downhill”, making a pass to Paul George, who missed a shot but fortunately had Terance Mann present to make a rebound. All of this indicated that the Clippers were ready to confront any situation that came their way during the game.

“The league has allowed more physicality and defenses have been given more power” said Timpf. “The home teams that are feeding off of that are benefitting from it”.

Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and PJ Washington were the only players from the Mavericks side who scored 10+ points during the matchup, with the first two putting a combined total of 64 points. The Clippers, however, had their offensive play spread out, putting Doncic and co at the disadvantage of having to defend multiple players. As highlighted above, the average age of the top 5 performers was 31.2 years, which meant that the Mavericks had to deal with an experienced veteran roster while mainly utilizing just two players on the frontcourt.

Having secured an average score of 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists during the regular season, Luka Doncic has been placed alongside Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jayson Tatum, and Anthony Edwards as a top contender for the MVP title. In order to increase his chances of consideration, however, the player has to first ensure that his team gets through the playoffs successfully. After their disappointing start, Doncic now believes that the answer lies in the past.

During the post-game press conference, the Slovenian player touched upon what’s next for the Mavericks by stating “We just gotta play like we used to play. Like we played the last 20 games of the season… passing the ball, cutting, ball movement. I think we did a great job the last 20 games. So, we just gotta play like that.”

The Mavericks held a 16-4 record prior to their Clippers clash. This last-minute push allowed them to rise higher on the Conference chart and earned them a high enough seed to qualify for the playoffs. Now, it’s up to them to replicate the same success. Whether the same will be done can only be answered during the franchise’s next game.
